PREP FOOTBALL: Redhawks hold off East Buchanan, 7-6

WINTHROP — Hale Hulme’s second-quarter touchdown run and extra-point kick provided the Class A No. 6 North Tama football team with just enough to get past East Buchanan, 7-6, in Friday’s District 7 clash.

Hulme hit paydirt from 1 yard out with 8 minutes left in the second quarter and the Redhawks (4-1, 2-1) held on for the duration. East Buchanan (2-3, 0-2) scored with 4:31 remaining in the game but failed on a 2-point conversion pass to leave the final margin at one.

North Tama got outgained 280-187 in total yards but won the turnover battle 1-0 and committed just one penalty.

Hulme finished 6-for-11 passing for 113 yards and was the team’s leading rusher with 29 yards on 12 carries. Tyler Morrison added 20 yards on the ground and Skyler Staker had another 17.

Zach Greiner had two receptions netting 73 yards for the Redhawks, and was the leading tackler on defense with 10 total stops, including one for loss, to go with an interception.

East Buchanan pounded out 260 rushing yards but didn’t hit paydirt until Kaden Brockenmeyer scored from 2 yards out late in the fourth quarter.

North Tama returns home next Friday night to face Grundy Center (4-1, 3-0) in a district contest.

Regals’ second quarter sinks Mustangs

IOWA CITY — Iowa City Regina used a three-touchdown second quarter to break a scoreless tie and turn back East Marshall in a 28-0 victory over the visiting Mustangs in Friday’s Class 1A District 6 football opener.

The Regals (2-3, 1-0) got all the offense they needed during the second period to overtake an East Marshall team that was held scoreless for the fourth-straight game.

The Mustangs (0-5, 0-1) were led by quarterback Cole Nauman with 66 rushing yards on 14 attempts. Noah Bandstra added 65 yards on 19 carries. Nauman finished 7-for-18 passing for 69 yards with one interception, as Kam Hoskins made five catches for 58 yards.

Noah Bandstra had six solo tackles and 17 assists, while Samuel Bandstra had four solo stops and 16 assists. Hoskins had six solo tackles and nine assists, while Hunter Velez recovered a fumble for East Marshall.

The Mustangs are back in Le Grand on Friday night, entertaining third-ranked Dike-New Hartford (5-0, 1-0) for Homecoming.
