PREP VOLLEYBALL: MHS netters 2-3 at Cedar Falls Invite

CEDAR FALLS — The Marshalltown volleyball team suffered its first loss to an unranked team on Saturday, falling to Cedar Rapids Prairie in three sets in the consolation semifinals of the Cedar Falls Invite.

The Bobcats (8-11) went 2-3 on the day, going 1-2 in Pool A before advancing through the first round of the consolation bracket with a win over Waterloo East (21-12, 21-14). In the semifinal round, Marshalltown was downed in three sets by Prairie, 25-23, 23-25, 15-5.

MHS opened the day in Pool A with a straight-set loss at the hands of Class 5A No. 1 Cedar Falls, 21-5, 21-5, but the Bobcats bounced back to beat Fort Dodge for the second time this week, winning 21-17, 16-21, 15-13. Pool play ended for Marshalltown with a 21-12, 21-14 loss to 3A No. 13 Waterloo Columbus.

“Our record doesn’t show it, but we started playing some really good ball the second half of the day,” said Marshalltown head coach Chris Brees.

For the tournament, freshman middle hitter Autumn Finch led the Bobcats with 31 kills and four blocks. Erica Johnson added 24 kills, Gabby Himes had 14 kills, and junior setter Madi Finch finished with 80 assists.

“Autumn had a really good day,” said Brees. “She is becoming a physical presence. She is starting to look really comfortable and holding her own against some really good middles.”

Defensively, MHS senior libero Alyvia Chadderdon led with 38 digs, while Johnson pitched in with 21. Chadderdon also served 28-for-30 with a team-high four aces, and Kyra Feldman served 45-for-47 with three aces. Tasia Pohle contributed three blocks.

Marshalltown is back in action Tuesday with a road trip to take on 5A No. 3 West Des Moines Valley.

Comets 3-2 at Dunkerton

DUNKERTON — The BCLUW volleyball team came away from the Dunkerton Tournament with a 3-2 showing, losing only to Class 4A No. 15 Clear Creek-Amana.

The Comets (14-7) defeated Northwood-Kensett (21-8, 21-8) and West Central (21-10, 21-11) in straight sets during pool play and lost to CCA (21-15, 21-12). In bracketed action, BCLUW beat Vinton-Shellsburg (27-25, 25-23) but lost to Clear Creek-Amana again (25-21, 25-23).

For the tournament, the Comets were led by Easton Swanson with 39 kills and 37 digs. Madison Ubben had 25 kills, 36 digs and a team-high 13 blocks. Jade Hammers tallied 22 kills, while setters Cate Nason and Lizzie Garber totaled 52 and 36 assists, respectively.

Defensively, Olivia Hughes chipped in with 27 digs and was 20-for-21 serving with three aces. Parker Scurr added 19 digs and was 44-for-45 serving with six aces, and Nason had 19 digs while serving 43-for-44 with three aces. Swanson served 44-for-46 with four aces.

BCLUW has a busy week in store, starting with Monday’s trip to Roland-Story for a tournament. The Comets go to South Hardin on Tuesday night and the Waterloo Columbus tournament next Saturday.

East Marshall ends on high note

TAMA — The East Marshall volleyball team bounced back from an 0-3 start to finish with a win at the South Tama Invitational on Saturday.

The Mustangs capped a 1-3 day with a victory over BGM, beating the Bears 21-10, 21-14. It began with straight-set losses to Belle Plaine (21-6, 21-9), South Tama (21-11, 21-18) and Class 2A No. 13 Hudson (21-11, 21-10).

Senior middle hitter Juliana Arifi led East Marshall with 33 kills, 26 digs and two blocks. Genesis Wanatee piled up 11 kills and 12 digs, and Maria Rasmusson finished with 41 assists and 15 digs.

Karissa Young contributed 12 digs for the Mustang defense, and Zoeie Fontanini added 10 digs. Suda Leschin chipped in with two blocks and Abby Ryan served up three aces.

East Marshall returns to NICL West Division action on Tuesday, hosting 2A No. 1 Grundy Center.
