SPORTS SHORTS: Mustangs lead locals at Comet Invite

UNION — The East Marshall girls cross country team finished second in the Comet Invitational, BCLUW’s home meet, while the Mustang boys took third as the top local finishers.

Wendy Liera paced the East Marshall girls by finishing in seventh with a time of 22 minutes, 43 seconds, while Olivia Terrones took 13th, Maddie Duncan 14th and Mkenzie Robinson 19th. Addie Lane and Melinda Puumala each finished in the top 25 as well and the Mustang girls put in a team score of 74.

Cade Curphy led the East Marshall boys with his time of 18:42, good enough to finish sixth individually. Cam Hungerford was next for the Mustangs in 12th, followed by Trevor Taul in 21st, Korbin Seth in 24th and Kordell Negrete in 27th. As a team East Marshall finished with a score of 90.

BCLUW took fourth on the boys side with a score of 94, led by senior Caleb Silver who finished fourth with a time of 18:10.

West Marshall was fourth on the girls end, paced by top-10 finishes from both Grace Girard and Avril Sinning, who took sixth and 10th respectively.

Callie Frakes was the highest local placer for the girls, taking third for South Tama with a time of 21:34. The Trojans were fifth as a team with a score of 117.

Jackson Edens was the highest local individual finisher on the boys side by crossing the line in second for GMG with a time of 18:02. The Wolverines placed eighth as a team with a score of 211.

Benton Community was the top finishing team for the boys by coming in with 57 points, while Kolby Winter from South Hardin took the top individual placing at a time of 17:38.

The Bobcats also won on the girls side with a score of 37, while Iowa Falls-Alden/AGWSR’s Aubrie Fisher took home the top individual honors by crossing at a time of 20:36.

Wolverine netters 1-4 at G-R tourney

REINBECK — The GMG volleyball team finished 1-4 at the Gladbrook-Reinbeck tournament on Saturday.

The Wolverines (4-12) took out Colo-NESCO in three sets, while they lost to the host Rebels, East Buchanan, North Butler and AGWSR all in two sets.

Madi Krull had 33 assists and 10 digs in the tournament, Tory Novotny had nine kills and 10 digs, Mable Dieleman recorded seven kills and 19 digs and Emily Vaughn finished with eight kills and 11 digs to lead GMG on the day.
