CROSS COUNTRY: Silver leads Comets to state

CEDAR RAPIDS — The BCLUW boys cross country team placed first in the 1A state-qualifying meet at Noelridge Park on Thursday with a score of 49, just two points ahead of South Winneshiek in second.

Caleb Silver paced the Comets to their state qualification with an individual win in the meet, as the senior came in first with a time of 17 minutes, 13 seconds, a full 14 seconds ahead of second place.

Neifer Ralston also had a top-10 finish for BCLUW, coming in eighth with am 18:13, while Ruben Montoya took 11th with an 18:16, Henry Kaisand came in 15th with an 18:29 and Treye Teske finished 18th with an 18:40.

North Tama’s Sam Snyder just missed out on an individual qualification, as he finished in 17th with an 18:35, just two spots away from a trip to Fort Dodge.

The BCLUW girls finished in 12th as a team with a score of 310. Katie Thompson was the highest Comet finisher in 20th with a 21:46, while Madison Engle was next in 61st with a 24:45.

Molly Kvidera was the top placer for the North Tama girls, coming in 55th with a time of 24:02.

GC/G-R boys advance in 2nd place

GARNER — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys cross country team qualified for state on Thursday by placing second in the Class 2A state-qualifying meet at Garner Golf Course with a score of 94, one point ahead of South Hardin in third.

Kenny Day was the top Spartan harrier by coming in sixth individually with a time of 17 minutes, 30 seconds. Derek Ciddio also was in the top 10, coming in eighth with a 17:33, and Paul Brockett finished in 11th by crossing the line at 17:49.

Sam Schildroth and Soren Cleveland were the other counting scores for GC/G-R in 26th and 43rd respectively.

The West Marshall boys finished in 11th with a score of 285. Nicholas Thompson paced the Trojans by placing 34th with a time of 18:41.

The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls just missed a state qualification by placing fourth with a 107. Freshman Taylor Stahl earned a trip to Fort Dodge in her first year running, however, as she came in fifth individually with a 20:30.

West Marshall also earned an individual qualification, as Grace Girard makes her second-straight showing at the state meet by placing 13th with a 21:28. The Trojans finished in eighth as a team with a 189.

STC’s Frakes making second trip to state

PELLA — South Tama County junior Callie Frakes earned the second state qualification of her career on Thursday by placing 10th in the Class 3A state-qualifying meet at the Central College Cross Country Course.

Frakes ran a time of 20 minutes, 21 seconds to earn her first state bid since her freshman year.

The Trojans came in 10th out of 11 teams with a score of 260. Jojo Tyynismaa was the next-best STC placer in 59th with a time of 24:08, while Alyssa Chyma and Abbigail Froelich took 64th and 65th respectively.

The South Tama County boys also finished in 10th with a score of 279, though it was out of 13 teams. Garrett was the top Trojan boy in 34th with a time of 18:21, followed by Jair Sosa in 50th with a 19:18 and Trusten Rosenberger in 60th with a 19:40.
