SPORTS SHORTS: Edens wins Iowa Star cross country

WAVERLY — The GMG cross country team took fifth in the Iowa Star South Conference meet on Thursday at the Wartburg College course with a score of 63.

Angel Schewe earned a top-12 finish for the Wolverines individually, coming in 12th with a time of 23 minutes, 20 seconds. Zoe Duncan and Belle Duncan each were in the top 20 as well, with Zoe finishing 17th with a 24:08 and Belle coming in 19th with a 24:45.

Emma Beeghly and Grace Schewe rounded out the GMG placers, coming in 25th and 29th respectively.

Meskwaki didn’t have a team score but Shye Johnson was the top area finisher, as the Warrior freshman placed eighth with a time of 22:55.

North Tama finished sixth as a team with a 106, with Molly Kvidera leading the way by placing 16th with a time of 24:44. Jorgan Rigel was next for the Redhawks in 27th with a 28:54, Elina Aghabekyan took 31st and Sabryna Rigel was 32nd.

Baxter won the Iowa Star South title with a team score of 25, and Brenna Thomson took first individually for the Bolts with a time of 21:22.

GMG took fifth on the boys side with a score of 74, with Jackson Edens pacing the Wolverines and the rest of the field by winning individually with a time of 17:42. Edens beat Baxter’s Logan Berg, who took second, by 15 seconds.

Spencer Tweedy was next for the Wolverines in 23rd with a time of 20:40, while Daniel Hughes finished in 26th with a 20:52. Cameron Spurlin and Gabe Zielstorf rounded out the GMG placers by taking 38th and 43rd respectively.

Taurice Grant had a top-10 finish for the Meskwaki boys, taking sixth individually with a time of 19:00. Tate Bear came in 31st for the Warriors and Zayton Weninger placed 45th.

Sam Snyder was the highest placer for North Tama by taking 13th with a 20:13, while Logan Kennedy came in 24th for the Redhawks with a 20:40.

Baxter was the boys champion for the Iowa Star South as well, finishing with a team score of 36 to beat Dunkerton by 10 points.

South Tama harriers host WaMaC meet

TAMA — The South Tama County boys cross country team finished 11th in the WaMaC Conference meet on Thursday with a score of 325 and the Trojan girls placed 11th with a 266.

STC junior Callie Frakes came in 13th with a time of 20 minutes, 41 seconds. Alyssa Chyma was next for the Trojan girls by finishing in 48th with a 22:50, and Jojo Tyynismaa came in 57th with a 23:00. Abbigail Froelich, Makayla Backen, Neena Lasley and Joselin Nunez followed by placing 69th, 79th, 89th and 93rd respectively.

Williamsburg was the top girls team with a score of 67, and Center Point-Urbana’s Adrianna Katcher finished first individually with a, 18:47.

South Tama junior Garrett Arp was the top boy finisher, coming in 35th with a time of 18:11. Trusten Rosenberger was the second Trojan, placing 63rd with a 19:26, and Logan Arp took 67th with a 19:40. Jonathan Meyer, Clayton Graff and Brayden Smith rounded out the STC placings in 75th, 85th and 86th respectively.

Marion won the WaMaC meet on the boys end with a score of 36, edging out Clear Creek-Amana by one point. Harrison Vanderlinden took the top individual spot for the Indians as well with a time of 16:30.

Mustangs close by beating GMG in 3

LE GRAND — The East Marshall volleyball team wrapped its regular season with a home win over GMG on Thursday in straight sets, 25-17, 25-22, 25-13.

Juliana Arifi had another monster night for the Mustangs (10-19) recording 30 kills, 13 digs and two aces. Genesis Wanatee also performed well with nine kills, 15 digs and three aces, and Maria Rasmusson had a team-high in both digs and assists with 17 and 43 respectively.

Suda Leschin also put up three blocks against the Wolverines (6-16) and the Mustangs as a team had 11 aces.

Kelsey Vaverka and Tory Novotny each had five kills for GMG, followed by Maes Groth with four. Madi Krull finished with a team-high 15 assists, and Vaverka led the way in digs with 15, followed by Novotny with 12.
