Bandstra, Pinnick 1st-team all-state
Two Bobcats honored on inaugural Iowa Print Sports Writers Association football teams
DES MOINES — East Marshall senior linebacker Noah Bandstra and West Marshall sophomore offensive lineman Luke Pinnick have been selected as first-team athletes for the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association All-State Football teams.
Bandstra earned his spot as a first-team linebacker on the Class 1A teams. Bandstra, who was a first-team linebacker in 2A last season, finished second in the class in total tackles with 110, including 78 solo tackles for the Mustangs. This was Bandstra’s second-straight year with at least 110 tackles, as he led 2A with 111.5 takedowns a year ago, and he finishes his career with 387 total tackles.
Bandstra was also the top offensive player for East Marshall with 526 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Pinnick, a sophomore who is already receiving offers from NCAA Division I programs, was selected to the 2A first team as an offensive lineman. He anchored a Trojan offensive line that helped West Marshall to 13th in 2A in rushing with 2,170 yards on the ground. The Trojans were also 12th in total offense with 3,716 yards, leading to their first appearance in the state playoffs since 2013.
Senior offensive lineman Keaton Baccam and junior defensive back Justice Richardson were both selected to the 4A third team for Marshalltown, the first all-state selections for the Bobcats since Blair Van Staalduine in 2013 and first time MHS has multiple selections since 2012 when Blake Gimbel, Tad Steffensen, Pedro Gomez and Tyler Kluver were honored.
Baccam was a senior captain for the Bobcats and a solid piece of an offensive line that led Marshalltown to 15th in the 4A in rushing with 1,936 yards. This was the first season the Bobcats have rushed for over 1,500 yards since doing so in back-to-back years in 2009 and 2010.
Richardson tied for the lead in 4A in fumbles recovered with four, and he had two interceptions to give him six combined takeaways, which tied for fifth in the state. Richardson also led Marshalltown in tackles with 45.
West Marshall had three other selections join Pinnick on the 2A teams. Senior Cameron Bannister was selected as the second team quarterback, while senior Joe Halverson earned a spot as a second team defensive lineman and senior Chase Burr was a second team linebacker.
Bannister was the only player in 2A to have over 1,000 yards passing and 1,000 yards rushing. He finished the year 1,546 yards passing and 1,376 yards rushing, and his combined 2,922 total yards were the fifth-best in the class. He was seventh in 2A in rushing with his 1,376 yards, and his 35 combined touchdowns were the fifth-best in the class. Bannister also tied for second in the class with six interceptions.
Burr was third in 2A with 98 tackles, while Halverson was fourth with 96. Both Trojans had eight tackles for loss to finish second on the team, and both had two sacks.
Halverson, who also was an all-state honoree in 2017, led the team in touchdown receptions with seven and was second in receiving yards with 490.
Burr was second for West Marshall in rushing yards with 633 and rushing touchdowns with four.
North Tama had three players make the Class A teams, the first Redhawks to be honored since five made the teams in 2012.
Junior Ryan McLean was selected as a second-team offensive lineman, senior Tyler Morrison was a second-team running back and junior Cory Isenhower was a second-team defensive lineman.
Morrison was fifth in Class A in rushing touchdowns with 24 and he had 1,224 rushing yards to finish 10th in the class. He also had 373 receiving yards and four touchdowns, putting Morrison 4th in Class A in total touchdowns with 28 and seventh in combined rushing and receiving yards with 1,597.
McLean opened many holes to lead the way for Morrison, and the Redhawks as a team were 16th in Class A with 2,437 rushing yards.
Isenhower was second on the team in tackles for loss with seven and he had 35 total tackles on the season.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck had one player make the 8-Man teams, with junior offensive lineman Aidan Walters honored on the second team. Walters and the Rebels ran for 2,510 yards, good enough for 14th in the state, and the Rebels made the 8-man playoffs in their inaugural season playing at that level.
In addition to all of the area All-State selections, there were many players placed on all-district teams.
Keaton Baccam and Justice Richardson were both first-team selections for the Bobcats in 4A District 2, and joining them as a first-team selection was Derrick Garth. Carson Beals, Jonathan Hernandez and Giorgio DiIorio were given second-team all-district honors for the Bobcats.
West Marshall had eight total players selected to the 2A District 7 first team: Chase Burr, Joe Halverson, Brayden Evertsen, David Willis, Jake Tollefson, Ben Kielman, Cameron Bannister and Luke Pinnick. Bannister was the offensive skill position MVP, Pinnick was the offensive line MVP and Burr was the kick and punt return MVP.
Jarrin Goecke, Brian Morrison and Josh Larsen were given second-team nods for the Trojans.
Four players from South Tama County were named to the all-3A District 7 team: Keith Keahna, Aaron Neave, Cael Kellogg and Payton Vest.
Noah Bandstra was the defensive MVP in 1A District 6 for East Marshall, and he was the only first-team selection for the Mustangs. Ryley Overton, Ethan Espenschied and Samuel Bandstra were all named to the second team.
North Tama had six players named to the all-Class A District 7 first team: Tyler Morrison, Hale Hulme, Cory Isenhower, Caleb DeBoef, Skyler Staker and Zach Greiner. Four more Redhawks were given second-team honors: Zade Podhajsky, Chase Morrison, Noah Bond and Luke Pennell.
BCLUW senior Jack Garber was also chosen to the Class A District 7 first team, while Koty Kruse was given a second-team nod for the Comets.
GMG sophomore Conner Murty was given a spot on the second team in Class A District 7.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck had seven total first-team selections on the all-8 Man District 5 squads, with Jackson Kiburis, Colton Clark, Aidan Walters and Eli Thede making the offensive first team and Lane Bach, Sam Mussig and Keagan Giesking making the defensive first team. Walters was also selected as an offensive lineman MVP in the district.
Noah Seymour earned an offensive first-team selection for Meskwaki on the 8-Man District 5 team as well.
