SPORTS SHORTS: Drake’s Rhine honored by MVC

ST. LOUIS — Drake University’s Sara Rhine was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, the first woman awarded the honor this season.

Rhine recorded back-to-back double-doubles in the Bulldogs’ two wins over Nebraska and Western Illinois, both while coming off the bench. She averaged 14.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game while shooting 60 percent from the floor.

Rhine had 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in 24 minutes in the win over the Cornhuskers, and she had 18 points and 11 boards against the Leathernecks in just 18 minutes.

Rhine was the MVC Sixth Player of the Year last season and an All-MVC First Team selection.

Hawks’ Gustafson gains another honor

ROSEMONT, Ill. — University of Iowa women’s basketball senior Megan Gustafson was named the Big Ten Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.

Gustafson led the Hawkeyes in points, rebounds, assists and blocks in Iowa’s season-opening win against Oral Roberts last Friday, netting 23 points, 17 rebounds, six assists and four blocks.

She also shot 61.1 percent from the floor against the Golden Eagles, and she had no turnovers.

Gustafson, the preseason Big Ten Player of the Year, earns her first weekly honor of the year. She broke a Big Ten single-season record last season with nine Player of the Week honors.

ISU’s Carleton added to watch list

AMES — Iowa State senior Bridget Carleton was named to the Naismith Trophy Watch List. Carleton has already been listed on the Wooden Award and Cheryl Miller Watch Lists and was a preseason all-Big 12 honoree.

Through two games this season, Carleton is the Cyclones’ leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 17.5 points and 14 rebounds per game.

The Naismith Trophy watch lists are published throughout the season with the midseason list set to be announced in mid-February. Players not on the current list are eligible for inclusion in later lists.

Warner’s three INTs leads to awards

Drake University safety Will Warner has been named the STATS FCS National Defensive Player of the Week following a record-setting performance in Saturday’s 13-10 win over Marist.

Warner, who was also named the Pioneer Football League Defensive Player of the Week, matched the Drake and PFL single-game interceptions record with three picks against the Red Foxes in the win.

He returned one of his three interceptions 28 yards to set up the game-winning field goal for the Bulldogs, and his third came in the final minute to end Marists’ comeback hopes. On the season, Warner leads FCS Non Scholarship teams with eight interceptions and 223 return yards.

Drake kicker Danny Donley also earned the PFL Special Teams Player of the Week honors after hitting two field goals to lead his team past the Red Foxes. He hit on tries from 24 and 39 yards and is 9-for-9 on the season.
