Anderson wins, MHS wrestling 6th at Regina

IOWA CITY — The Marshalltown wrestling team finished sixth out of 16 teams in the Iowa City Regina Invitational on Saturday with a score of 99.5.

Jordan Anderson was the lone bracket winner for the Bobcats as he finished atop the heavyweight division.

Anderson (11-0), who is ranked No. 8 in Class 3A at heavyweight by The Predicament, received a bye in his first round, then got his first win with a 12-1 major decision over Cole Cremeens from Williamsburg.

Neither of Anderson’s next two matches would go past the first period, as he pinned Solon’s Michael Broghammer one minute and eight seconds into their semifinal match, then Anderson pinned North Cedar’s Chase Gallagher 31 seconds into the finals match.

Zach Bitker, who is ranked No. 9 at 126 pounds for the Bobcats, reached the finals at 126 as well but suffered his first loss of the year with Solon’s Hayden Taylor winning with a 9-2 decision in the final. Taylor is ranked No. 4 in Class 2A by The Predicament.

In his first three rounds, Bitker (11-1) won by a 22-6 technical fall over Bailey Frescolin from Pekin, beat Mount Pleasant’s Dalton Moyle with a first-period pin in the quarterfinals, then Bitker took an 8-4 decision over Williamsburg’s Sam Van Dee in the semifinals.

Bennett Hageman (7-3) was the next-best placer for Marshalltown by taking third at 120.

Hageman was sent to the consolation bracket after losing his semifinal match in a 7-0 decision to John Crowley from Tipton, who is ranked No. 9 at 120 in 2A. Hageman bounced back in the third-place match with a 4-0 decision victory over Cohyn Roach from Fairfield.

Gannon Williams finished in fifth in the 170 bracket, while Victor Zavala-Livengood took sixth at 152, Coltin Grimm took sixth at 160 and Austin Close placed sixth at 182.
