Bobcat boys bowlers clip Mohawks, girls edged out

Ray Wiegand and Sydney Dannen

MASON CITY — The Marshalltown boys bowling team took its show on the road for a big win over CIML Iowa Conference foe Mason City on Monday at Mystic Lanes, 3,257-2,616.

Ray Wiegand had the high series for the Bobcats (6-0, 2-0) with a 462, followed by Demitri Ferneau with a 436, Logan Proffitt’s 406, Lucas Kramer’s 394, Kamrin Chizek’s 361 and Carson Potter’s 350.

Bobcat bowling head coach DJ Wilder said it was a bit of a slow start for his boys on the lanes, but they are too good to be kept down for long.

“They had good communication and got it all figured out and got it going in the second,” Wilder said. “It was just another Ray Wiegand show tonight, and both Demitri and Logan shot well as the night went on.”

MHS dominated in the Baker games with a season-high 1,192 in the five games. The Bobcats’ lowest score in the Bakers was a 220 in the final game.

The Marshalltown girls finished just shy of making it a clean sweep, as they fell to the Mohawks by just 46 pins, 2,334-2,288.

Sydney Dannen once again had a solid outing for the Bobcats (4-2, 1-1) as she turned in the high series with a 351. Three other MHS girls also shot in the 300s, with Emily Diggins coming in with a 330, Ashly Wiegand rolling a 316 and Kylee Witt finishing with a 303. Ashlyn Rutledge rounded out the scoring with a 220, followed by Jordan May with a 210.

The girls once again had a great showing in the Baker games with a 768, but Wilder said it just wasn’t enough to complete the comeback.

“We were down 68 after first round but cut it to around 16 after third baker game. We were going in the right direction then ran into a buzzsaw,” he said. “They ran into some unfortunate breaks and couldn’t overcome, but the girls fought hard.”

In the final two Baker games, Mason City outscored Marshalltown 304-274 to hold off the Bobcat surge.

Marshalltown will be back on the lanes in a week when it hosts Fort Dodge on Dec. 18, starting at 3:45 p.m. at Wayward Social.
