PREP WRESTLING: Champion trio leads EM/GMG to 3rd place
STORY CITY — The East Marshall/GMG wrestling team placed second in the Jim Kinyon Norsemen Invitational on Saturday with a score of 162.
Three Mustangs finished atop their brackets on the day, with Dominik Ridout winning at 106 pounds, Cole Nauman taking the bracket at 152 and Noah Bandstra finishing on top at 195.
Ridout, who came into the invite ranked No. 7 at 106 in Class 2A by The Predicament, started the day with a bye in the quarterfinals, then beat David Grimes from Roland-Story by a 15-0 technical fall in the semifinals.
Ridout (13-3) continued his roll in the finals with a pin of Hampton-Dumont’s Jakyb Kapp with one second remaining in the first period.
Nauman (13-1) started his day with a win 12-1 major decision over Gilbert’s Kruz Pierce in the quarterfinals at 152. He then beat Eli Thorson from Rolan Story by a 3-0 decision in the semifinals and closed out with a 7-1 decision victory over Wyatt Dillon from Grinnell in the finals.
Bandstra, ranked No. 6 at 195, received a bye in his quarterfinal round then made quick work of Southeast Polk’s Colton Richardson in the semifinals with a pin 42 secons into the first period.
Bandstra (15-1) had a much tougher task in his finals match, however, as he took a 3-1 decision in the first sudden victory period over Dalton Chipp from Hampton-Dumont, who is ranked just ahead of Bandstra at No. 5.
Two other East Marshall/GMG wrestlers made their finals match, with Carson Burchland taking second at 138 and Conner Murty finishing second at 182.
Burchland lost by a 14-7 decision to Winterset’s Kruise Kiburz in the finals at 138 and Murty was pinned in the second period by Coby Meyer from Knoxville, who is ranked No. 9 at 182.
STC third at Pella Invite
PELLA — The South Tama County wrestling team took third in the Bill Van Horn Invitational on Saturday with a score of 167.
Aiden Waseskuk took first in the 182-pound bracket, the only first-place finish for the Trojans on the night.
Waseskuk (14-5) received a bye in the quarterfinals, then he started his day with a first-period pin of Connor Vroegh from Norwalk in the semifinals.
Waseskuk won the finals in even quicker fashion, taking down Conner Reed from Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont just 34 seconds into the first period.
Logan Arp at 113, Brayden Smith at 138, Vincent Branan at 152, Dallas Horne at 160 and Cael Kellogg at 220 all finished in third by winning their consolation brackets.
Brody Chyma at 106, Boden Koehler at 132 and Aaron Neave at 195 all reached the finals of their consolation brackets but lost, settling for fourth.
Vawter tops at IFA Invite
IOWA FALLS — The West Marshall wrestling team finished seventh out of 10 teams in the 11th Annual Jones Brothers Tournament on Saturday.
Jacob Vawter finished in first in the 120-pound bracket for the Trojans. Vawter started off with a pin of Iowa Falls-Alden’s Evan Ackerman 32 seconds into their quarterfinal match, then he pinned Vinton-Shellsburg’s Bryce Radeke at the 1:52 mark of their semifinal match.
In the finals, Vawter didn’t get another pin but he took a 9-0 major decision over Cade Hardy from North Butler-Clarksville.
Grant Nason and Cael Kline took third place at 138 and 160 respectively for West Marshall.
Nason won his third-place match against Kayne Marshall from Iowa Valley with a first-period pin, and Kline took out Adam Heflin from Garner-Hayfield-Ventura with a first-period pin in his third-place match.
Kolthoff wins at N. Polk
ALLEMAN — The South Hardin-BCLUW wrestling team was in action at the North Polk Comet Invitational on Saturday.
Taylor Kolthoff was the lone bracket winner for the Storm, as he took first at 120 pounds.
Kolthoff (16-2) beat Wyatt Gelhaus from Forest City in the quarterfinals by a second-period pin, then he took a 9-0 major decision over Ryan Davidson from North Polk in the semifinals.
In the finals, Kolthoff once again earned a major decision, this time beating Cauy Fitch from Colfax-Mingo 20-12.
Carter Kolthoff also reached the final match at 106 but fell in a 9-4 decision to Brock Moore from Forest City. Carter earned a first-period pin win over Ethan Domina from Clarke in the quarterfinals and he beat Tanner Smith from the Waukee junior varsity in a second-period pin in the semifinals.
Coby Willett at 126, Michael Fuller at 160 and Lucas Gunderson at 195 all placed third in their brackets for SH-BCLUW. Nick Feldpausch at 113, Owen Fuller at 182 and Logan Gunderson at 220 all finished in fourth.
