Iowa tops Minnesota, Cyclones pin Fresno St

MINNEAPOLIS — The No. 4 Iowa wrestling team defended the Governor’s Border Belt at Minnesota, defeating the No. 8 Gophers, 24-10, in Big Ten Conference action Sunday inside Maturi Pavilion.

Iowa won 7-of-10 matches, beating three top-10 wrestlers to extend its winning streak against Minnesota to five.

“We have guys that want to wrestle and we have guys that get ready to wrestle,” said Iowa head coach Tom Brands. “We came into Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota … they geared up for it, our guys get up for it. Good things happen when you get ready.”

Iowa (7-0, 2-0) won four of five matches prior to intermission. Fifth-ranked Kaleb Young led things off with a 7-1 win at 157. The match was tied 1-1 before Young threw No. 9 Steve Bleise to his back with 10 seconds left in the third.

Marinelli extended Iowa’s lead to 9-0, notching his fifth pin of the season.

Mitch Bowman nearly kept Iowa perfect through three bouts, but he ran out of time against No. 11 Devin Skatzka at 174 in an 11-9 loss.

Cash Wilcke and Jacob Warner won by decision at 184 and 197, respectively, giving Iowa a 15-3 lead at the break.

Minnesota (8-2, 1-1) cut the lead to 15-7 when No. 2 Gable Steveson defeated Connor Corbin, 12-3, at 285.

Iowa responded with consecutive top-10 wins from Spencer Lee and Austin DeSanto at 125 and 133, respectively. Lee blanked No. 6 Sean Russell, 4-0, and DeSanto finished on top of No. 6 Ethan Lizak, 6-1, at 133.

No. 6 Mitch McKee beat Iowa’s No. 15 Max Murin at 141 before the Hawkeyes’ No. 12-ranked Pat Lugo scored a 14-0 major decision of No. 20 Tommy Thorn to close out the dual.

Iowa hosts No. 24 Rutgers on Friday at 8 p.m. at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

ISU 31, Fresno St. 6

AMES – The No. 21 Iowa State wrestling team defeated Fresno State 31-6 in Big 12 Conference action Sunday at Hilton Coliseum.

Iowa State won eight of 10 matches contested, with four tacking on bonus points.

Ian Parker set the tone with a 19-5 major decision over Chris Deloza at 141 pounds. Jarrett Degen notched an 11-5 win at 149.

Marcus Coleman registered four takedowns and a four-point nearfall at 174, scoring a 14-1 win over Dominic Kincaid.

Iowa State’s 125-pounder Alex Mackall pinned Robert Garcia, and Austin Gomez (133) put the exclamation point on the match with a 24-5 technical fall over Gary Joint.

Iowa State travels to Lawrenceville, N.J., to face Rider on Thursday at 6 p.m.
