MHS rattles off 7-straight to pin down Mason City

MASON CITY — Marshalltown junior 152-pounder Wyatt DeMeyer won his varsity wrestling debut as the first of seven-straight Bobcat victories to close out Tuesday’s CIML Iowa Conference win over Mason City, 49-22.

DeMeyer defeated Riley Monahan by a 7-5 decision in sudden victory, outlasting his Mason City counterpart in overtime after the Class 3A No. 24 Mohawks had taken a 22-13 lead through the first half of the dual.

The Bobcats (2-7, 1-2) responded to win the last seven matches for their first conference dual meet victory, defeating the Mohawks (2-12) convincingly. Marshalltown’s eighth-ranked heavyweight Jordan Anderson improved to 16-0 this season with a 5-2 decision over No. 2 Troy Monahan in the final match of the night, capping a seven-match, 36-point run for the Bobcats.

DeMeyer’s win was followed by a pin for Coltin Grimm at 160, decking Mason City’s Chase Olsen in 1 minute, 42 seconds, and three-straight forfeits by the Mohawks. Julian Gomez resumed the run for Marshalltown with a first-period pin of Caden Brager (1:35) at 220, and Anderson finished off the meet by winning a ranked showdown.

Mason City led 10-0 before Bennett Hageman got the Bobcats on the board with his third-period pin of Seth Ihlenfeldt at 120, and 10th-ranked Zach Bitker evened things up with a 12-3 major decision over Connor Wiemann. Saul Pantoja made it 13-10 Marshalltown with his 5-2 decision of Chris Keller, but a pair of six-point wins for Mason City put the Mohawks out front, 22-13.

DeMeyer’s varsity debut kickstarted the Bobcat comeback and Anderson finished it with an upset victory.

Marshalltown, which ended a seven-dual losing streak by beating Mason City, visits No. 5 West Des Moines Valley on Thursday night before going to the South Hardin-BCLUW Invite on Saturday in Eldora.
