Bandstra wins first round, Nauman makes second day

DES MOINES — The Class 2A competitors were the nightcap at the Iowa High School State Wrestling Meet on Thursday in Wells Fargo Arena, and East Marshall/GMG senior Noah Bandstra made a splash when he took center stage.

Bandstra, ranked No. 2 at 195 pounds by The Predicament, started his first ever state tournament with a quick pin of Andy Murphy from Decorah just 1 minute, 13 seconds into their match.

Bandstra (38-2) moves on to the quarterfinals now where he is pitted against Caleb Olson (31-4) from Webster City, who beat Chayce Hoover from Sioux Center in the first round by a second-period pin. Olson comes into the match ranked No. 5.

Cole Nauman also made his debut for the Mustangs at 152, but he fell in his first match to No. 7 Matthew Doyle from Independence by a 9-1 major decision.

In the first round consolation match, Nauman was trailing Bryce Cole from Van Meter heading to the third period but tied things up at 11-all, then Nauman managed a takedown in the first overtime period to win, 13-11.

Nauman (32-9) now waits to find out his next opponent, as he will face the loser of the 152 quarterfinal between No. 3 Kyler Reick (39-2) from Spirit Lake and Connor Pellett (45-9) from Atlantic.

The 2A quarterfinals and second-round consolation matches start at 2:30 p.m. today at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
