No. 17 UNI wrestling knocks off No. 11 ISU

CEDAR FALLS — The No. 17 University of Northern Iowa wrestling team pulled off the upset on No. 11 Iowa State on Thursday at West Gym, 22-13, in their Big 12 Conference showdown.

The win for the Panthers (7-5, 7-1) was the third-straight against the Cyclones (10-3, 6-2), the longest win streak for UNI over Iowa State since winning 11 in a row from 1940-1952.

Northern Iowa won six out of 10 bouts on the night. After starting the match with a 9-8 lead through five matches, No. 12 Bryce Steiert at 165 pounds took a 16-1 technical fall victory over Logan Schumacher to give the Panthers a 14-8 lead. No. 8 Taylor Lujan followed with a pin over No. 21 Marcus Coleman in the second period at 174 to give UNI a 20-8 lead, then Carter Isley sealed the win with a 2-0 decision over No. 25 Gannon Gremmel at heavyweight to give the Panthers the 22-13 win.

No. 5 Willie Miklus at 197, No. 7 Austin Gomez at 133 and No. 15 Sam Colbray at 184 all picked up wins for Iowa State, with Colbray pulling off an upset over No. 8 Drew Foster by an 8-5 decision.

The Cyclones return to Hilton Coliseum on Sunday for a meeting with No. 5 Missouri, while UNI is done until the Big 12 Conference Tournament on March 9-10.
