SPORTS SHORTS: Comets chase off Gladbrook-Reinbeck

CONRAD — Four players scored in double figures for the BCLUW girls’ basketball team, which bounced Gladbrook-Reinbeck 49-17 in Friday’s NICL West Division game.

Madison Ubben and Allison Engle shared team-high scoring honors for the Comets (8-9, 5-4) with 11 points apiece, while Bailey Ashton and Easton Swanson both finished with 10 points. Swanson led the team with nine rebounds, Ubben added six and Engle had four more in the win.

Katie Thompson contributed five points for the Comets, while Olivia Hughes tallied two points, four rebounds and three assists.

Taylor Gienger led Gladbrook-Reinbeck (7-11, 2-8) with 11 points, and Reagan Skovgard chipped in five. Belen Ellenberger and Saari Kuehl had five rebounds apiece to pace the Rebels.

Both teams play conference home games today as BCLUW entertains West Marshall while Gladbrook-Reinbeck hosts East Marshall.

Janesville prolongs Wolverines’ woes

JANESVILLE — The Class 1A No. 10 Janesville dealt the GMG girls’ basketball team its sixth loss in its last seven games, defeating the Wolverines 59-31 in Friday’s Iowa Star Conference cross-divisional contest.

The host Wildcats (14-3) got a game-high 16 points from Alisa Bengen, while Briana Baker-Bruce finished with 11 points and Grace Hovenga added 10 more.

GMG got 11 points from Kelsey Vaverka and another seven from Jordan Yilek. The Wolverines trailed 31-16 at the half and couldn’t gain ground after the intermission, falling to 8-9 overall.

GMG is back in action Sunday, visiting North Tama in an Iowa Star South Division makeup game slated for 3:15 p.m. in Traer.

Ex-Bobcat collects academic honor

ST. PAUL — The University of Northwestern had 68 student-athletes earn Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference honors for their fall seasons.

One of those athletes was former Marshalltown soccer player Ellyn Boland, who is a junior on the Eagle women’s soccer team.

Boland was fourth in total minutes played for the Eagles this season, serving as a captain on the defensive side. She was a second-team all-conference selection in the UMAC for her defensive prowess.

All student-athletes on the academic all-conference teams have a grade-point average of 3.5 or better during their respective semesters of competition.
