SPORTS SHORTS: More accolades for Iowa’s Gustafson

IOWA CITY — University of Iowa’s Megan Gustafson continued to rake in the awards this week.

The Hawkeye senior earned her 21st career Big Ten Conference Player of the Week, expanding the record she already owned with last week’s 20th career weekly conference award. She was also named ESPNW National Player of the Week and appeared on the Naismith Trophy Midseason Team.

Gustafson averaged 35 points, 15 rebounds and shot 72.1 percent from the field last week.

She netted 41 points on 17-for-24 shooting from the floor to lead Iowa to an 86-71 win over Michigan State on Thursday. She also had 14 rebounds and recorded four blocks, dished out two assists and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line against the Spartans.

On Sunday against Ohio State, Gustafson tied the Big Ten record with her 77th career double-double, finishing with 29 points and 16 boards in a 78-52 win over the Buckeyes. Gustafson tied Ohio State’s Jantel Lavender for the double-double record, who Gustafson also passed for the conference weekly awards record.

In 24 games this season, Gustafson is averaging an NCAA-best 27.3 points per game on 70.6 percent shooting from the floor. She is second nationally with 22 double-doubles, and she is fourth in rebounds per game with 12.8.

Hittner earns second-straight honor

ST. LOUIS — Drake University junior Becca Hittner was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week for a second-straight week, the conference announced on Monday.

Hittner, the reigning Jackie Stiles MVC Player of the Year, averaged 21 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists while shooting 56.7 percent from the floor in two blowout wins over Valparaiso and Loyola last week. Against the Crusaders, Hittner had a game-high 23 points on 15 shots, including a 4-for-6 mark from behind the 3-point line. She also had seven rebounds and two assists in 24 minutes played.

Against the Ramblers, Hittner had 19 points and a career-high seven assists to go along with six rebounds and a steal in 26 minutes of play.

Hittner leads the MVC in scoring at 19.8 points per game while shooting a league-best 44.3 percent from three. Hittner’s career 46.2 percent clip from the 3-point line is the best active percentage in the NCAA.

Carleton named to Naismith Trophy list

ATLANTA — Iowa State University senior Bridget Carleton was named to the Naismith Trophy Midseason Team, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Monday.

Carleton is the leading scorer in the Big 12 with 20.6 points, and she has 8.4 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 2.3 steals and 1.3 blocks per game. She has also been named to the Cheryl Miller Award list and is a Senior CLASS nominee.

She ranks fourth in Cyclone history with 1,856 career points, while her 16.5 points per game scoring average is second in school history.
