SPORTS SHORTS: Garber wins hurdles at ISU indoor

AMES — Both the Marshalltown and BCLUW boys track teams were in attendance at the Iowa State Boys High School Classic.

Comet senior Jack Garber won the 60-meter hurdles over 95 other competitors with a time of 8.21, nudging by Southeast Polk’s Jace Christensen by two tenths of a second.

Fellow BCLUW senior Caleb Silver got two top-20 finishes, taking 15th out of 91 runners in the 3,200 with a time of 10:18.94 and 17th out of 103 competitors in the 1,600 with a 4:49.94.

Marshalltown had one top-20 finish, as Dru Dobbins finished in 15th out of 111 throwers in the shot put with a toss of 46 feet, six inches. Gabe Wyant finished in 24th out of 94 in the long jump with a vault of 18-9, and the 4×400 relay team of Deonte Dean, Wyant, Gage Stalzer and Brent Johnson were 28th, crossing the line in 3:45.64.

Kirkwood advances to second round

DANVILLE, Ill — The Kirkwood Community College men’s basketball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Division II Tournament on Wednesday with a 96-66 win over North Central Missouri.

The Eagles, who came in as the top seed for the tournament, led 53-32 at halftime against the 16th-seeded Pirates.

Kirkwood freshman and former Marshalltown standout Luke Appel had eight points, six rebounds and four assists in 24 minutes off the bench. Allante Pickens was the game’s leading scorer with 24 points on 9-for-10 shooting, including a 6-for-7 mark from the 3-point line, for the Eagles.

Kirkwood moves on to face ninth-seeded Niagara County in the quarterfinals today at 6 p.m.
