McKibben aids ’Cats in return to lineup
FORT DODGE — The presence of a returning state qualifier at the top of the lineup paid instant dividends for the Marshalltown boys tennis team.
Bobcat senior Luke McKibben returned to action and helped MHS dominate in doubles play during a 9-2 victory over Fort Dodge in Monday’s CIML Iowa Conference dual meet.
McKibben and state-qualifying doubles teammate Luke Smith scored a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Lucas Buie and Chris Hatton in the No. 1 doubles position that kicked off a doubles sweep for the Bobcats (5-2, 2-1), who won their fourth-straight dual thanks to a 4-2 advantage in singles and five straight-set wins in doubles competition.
Kevin Strand and Jacob Smith notched a 6-2, 7-6 victory at No. 2 doubles over Daniel Leigh and Antavion Adams, and Jacob Eberle and Colin Schmit fought past Nathan Blocker and Luke Vaughan, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3. Ethan Benscoter and Nic Price picked up a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Nathan Hayes and David Folsom, and Carson Beals and John Loney capped the sweep with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Zach Schwering and Ross Halligan.
Luke Smith improved to 3-1 in the No. 1 singles spot by blanking Buie, 6-0, 6-0, while the freshman Strand scored his first win in the No. 2 position by finishing off Hatton 7-5, 6-0.
Jacob Smith needed every point for his 7-6, 6-4 defeat of Blocker at No. 4, and Benscoter prevailed 6-4, 6-3 over Vaughan.
