SPORTS SHORTS: GC/G-R girls slam Bulldogs in one half

REINBECK — The Class 1A No. 9 Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls soccer team continued its strong start to the season with its biggest win of the year on Tuesday, a 14-0 decision over Hampton-Dumont/CAL in 40 minutes.

Maddie McMartin scored four goals for the Rebels (6-0) on eight total shots, while Abby Hamann and Belen Ellenberger both had two goals off the bench. Rachel Scarf led in assists with three and Makenzie Martens picked up the win in goal with 40 scoreless minutes.

GC/G-R has one of its toughest tests to date tonight, a road meeting with No. 4 Union Community starting at 5:30 p.m.

Rebel soccer outscores Bulldogs 7-3

REINBECK — The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys soccer team won a home match against Hampton-Dumont/CAL on Tuesday, 7-3.

Eli Thede had three goals for a hat trick for the Rebels (4-2) and Travis Kuester added two goals and two assists. Colton Clark and Ethan Gienger accounted for the other scores.

Kale Hasselman went 70 minutes in goal for GC/G-R, giving up three goals but recording four saves as well.

The Rebels next host Class 2A No. 8 Waverly-Shell Rock tonight, starting at 5:30 p.m.

STC netters defeated by South Hardin

ELDORA — The South Tama County girls tennis team dropped a meet to South Hardin on Tuesday, 7-2.

The Trojans (2-4) were able to get a win in both the singles and doubles matches, with Hope Werner beating Sarah England at No. 4 singles, 8-2, and Abbie Morgan and Zoee Buffalo defeating Meghan Van De Pol and Emma Spieker at No. 1 doubles, 8-3.

STC is back on the courts today for a home match against Maquoketa, starting at 4 p.m.

Redhawk boys fifth at Belle Plaine

BELLE PLAINE — The North Tama boys track and field team placed fifth out of five teams at the Belle Plaine Coed Meet on Tuesday with 92 points.

Hale Hulme won the high jump for the Redhawks with a height of 5 feet, 8 inches, and Ryan McLean was second in the shot put with a toss of 41-9.

North Tama placed first in three relays as well, with the 4×100-meter team of Tayten Payne, Tyler Morrison, Hulme and Luke Pennell winning with a time of 46.3 seconds, the 4×200 team of Chase Morrison, Cael Even, Hulme and Tyler Morrison taking first with a 1:36.85 and the shuttle hurdle relay team of Tyler, Even, Gabe Kopriva and Hulme winning in 1:02.32.

North Tama girls place 5th out of 6

BELLE PLAINE — The North Tama girls track and field team finished in fifth out of six teams at the Belle Plaine Coed Meet on Tuesday with 62 points.

Juliana Breakenridge had the best individual placing by taking second in the 800-meter run in a time of 2 minutes, 43.16 seconds. She also finished fourth in the 400 with a 1:10.06.

Molly Kvidera placed third in the long jump with a distance of 13 feet, 11 1/4 inches, while Takoa Kopriva and Abby DeBoef tied for fourth in the high jump with a height of 4-8 and Rylee McLean was fourth in both the discus and shot put.

The 4×800 team of Kvidera, Carlie Gorder, Mya Sierra and Breakenridge also placed second in 11:13.25.
