Optimism and gratitude were in the air Thursday afternoon as the Marshalltown Area United Way held its Final Campaign Report Luncheon inside the Fisher Community Center Auditorium.

This year’s goal to raise $750,000 to help support the organization’s 26 local agencies has nearly been met.

“We are just under meeting 96 percent of our goal, but we’re still waiting for some pledges to come in,” said campaign co-chair Deb Mettlin.

As of Thursday, the United Way has raised $718,138.03.

It was noted the organization’s golf event raised $8,500, and the Power of the Purse fundraiser brought in $17,000.

“Jan. 5 is the cut-off for donations made for this year, so please help us make this goal. We are so close,” Mettlin said.

Mettlin, along with co-chair Marty Mitchell, thanked the many volunteers and campaign and cabinet members who have worked to make this 87th campaign year a success.

“It was a lot of fun. I got to reconnect with a lot of friends,” Mitchell said.

Long-time Executive Director Nancy Steveson, who has served the United Way for almost 40 years, was honored for her dedication.

“Nancy is the heart and soul of this organization,” Mettlin said.

A visibly grateful Steveson thanked the many groups and individuals who have helped the United Way along in its 87 years working to better the Marshalltown area.

“Your support is invaluable,” Steveson said. “We’ve been raising money for the 26 agencies who will soon be doing their 2018 budgets. If we weren’t able to raise these funds, we would have a lot of agencies in this town in a world of hurt.”

The 2018 Campaign co-chairs will be Marshalltown Police Department Capt. Chris Jones and Marshall County Sheriff Steve Hoffman.
