NEWTON — The Marshalltown baseball team got its season started off strong on Tuesday with a win over rival Newton, 9-2.

Nate Vance got the start on the mound for the Bobcats (1-0), pitching three innings of scoreless baseball with five strikeouts. Vance allowed no baserunners in his three innings.

Tate Kuehner pitched the next two innings, allowing four hits, one walk and one run while striking out three. Wade Canaday came in for the save, going the final two innings scoreless and matching Vance with five strikeouts. The Bobcats’ staff as a whole struck out 13 on the night.

“Our pitchers generally did a good job throwing strike one which makes things a lot easier on our defense,” Marshalltown head coach Steve Hanson said.

Luke Appel had a good start to his first time on the diamond since seventh grade, going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Dylan Eygabroad went 2-for-4 against the Cardinals (0-1), while Vance, Kuehner and Dru Dobbins all recorded doubles.

“Our base running was pretty good for opening night a

nd any time you can go on the road and be successful in both the JV and varsity games, while getting everyone on the field, you have to be pleased,” Hanson said. “After three weeks of practice it was great to get on the field and play someone different than ourselves.”

Next up the Bobcats will travel to Waterloo on Thursday to face off with Waterloo East in a doubleheader.

“We still have a big week ahead but it all starts with practice tomorrow,” Hanson said. “As long as we don’t lose sight of the importance of trying to improve in practice, I think we will be OK.”
