BH/RV pulls away in 2A

CEDAR FALLS (AP) — Versatile quarterback Brett Moser accounted for all six of his team’s touchdowns as Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley swept past LaPorte City Union 41-22 on Friday to win the Class 2A state championship.
Moser threw four touchdown passes and ran for two others while picking apart the Union defense with completions to 10 different receivers. He finished with 25 completions, a 2A title game record, in 35 attempts for 317 yards and no interceptions.
BH/RV (12-1) exploded for 28 points in a dominant second half after leading just 13-7 at halftime. It’s the first state title for the program and enabled coach Cory Brandt to join his father Barry to form the first father-son coaching combinations to win state championships.
Barry Brandt guided Glidden-Ralston to the Class 1A crown in 1975.
Union (11-2) got 165 yards rushing from Isaiah Vaughn but never found an answer to Moser’s passing.
Vaughn had rushed for 397 yards in a semifinal victory over Mount Vernon, and BH/RV did a decent job against him after he racked up 68 yards on his first two carries. He sped 30 yards on the game’s first play from scrimmage, then went 38 yards for a touchdown on the next snap.
Moser’s TD passes to Mitchell Diekevers (4 yards) and Alex Frick (10 yards) gave the Nighthawks their halftime lead. Then they struck quickly in the second half.
Shane Solberg got behind the defense and made an over-the-shoulder catch of Moser’s perfectly thrown ball on a 72-yard touchdown play. Vaughn got loose for a 57-yard touchdown run a little more than a minute later, but BH/RV came back with three straight TDs to blow it open.
Moser rolled right and scored from 4 yards out, Jacob Schafer turned a short toss from Moser into a 29-yard touchdown and Moser capped his big day by slipping away from two tacklers and bulling over two others at the goal line on a 2-yard touchdown.
It was the second championship of the day for Sioux County in far northwest Iowa. Hull Western Christian beat Iowa City Regina for the 1A crown.
