East Marshall senior basketball player Walker Seim was one of the top scorers in all of Iowa boys high school basketball at 28.5 points per game. He had scored 20 points or more in each of the Mustang’s 10 games in 2007 and hit 29 or more points in a game six times.

Children at the Fisher Child Care Center: Dani King, Amy Wieland, Allison Hineman, Justin Giannetto, Brian Wauters, Dani Grewell, Jamie Sommerlot, Nate Grewell, Michelle Sommerlot, Adam Terrin and Eric Hineman celebrated New Year’s Eve day with a round of karaoke.

Carissa Bryant, 11, daughter of Anita Bryant, of Marshalltown, and Mick Bryant, of Le Grand, was selected to be a finalist in the 1993 Miss Iowa National Pre-Teen and Pre-Teen Petite Pageants.

Brad LeRoy Ferch weighing 8 pounds, 8 ounces was the first baby born in the county at 2:02 p.m. on Jan. 1 at Marshalltown Area Community Hospital.

Ryan Van Haaften met all the requirements to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. His service project was to make improvements to Akers Field in Garwin by installing a scoreboard, improving the parking lot, making walk ways over the ditch and painting the new building.

Daniel and Michael Gilbert, of Iowa Falls, showed a Brown Swiss heifer in the senior heifer calf division of the 1977 Kentucky National Brown Swiss Show and Sale and it won first place.

The 2007 All-Area football Play of the Year happened in the Grundy Center-BCLUW game when Grundy was making moves in the second half to catch up. With only four minutes left in the game, the BCLUW quarterback Blake Zacharias took the snap and handed off to running back Terry Matney as he had done all night. Matney ran forward, but stopped just short of the scrimmage line, threw a pass to Zacharias downfield, all alone, who caught the ball and walked in for the touchdown securing the game for BCLUW.

Brenda and Mark Hedum were the parents of the first baby born in 1993 when Hannah Renee was born at 5:24 p.m. on Jan. 2 weighing 8 pounds, 14 ounces and measuring 22 inches long.

The Bobcat swimmers defeated East Waterloo 54-29 as they swept the 50 yard dash when David Bell and Art Kosieradzki finished in first and second place; Jeff Stichter and John Taylor went one and two in the diving; Steven Brennecke and Rick Ritland were one and two in the 100 yard butterfly and Steven Robbins and Kell finished one and two in the 100 yard freestyle.

The MHS girls junior varsity basketball team defeated Newton 54-27 as Michelle Airey finished with 12 points and 15 rebounds and Lindsey Zwemke added 13 points and five rebounds.

MHS girls gymnasts easily handled Waterloo Central 119.50-73.55 as Denise Leavy set a new MHS record in the all around winning three events: balance bean, floor exercise and tumbling to score 35.05 points for her team.

The Green Mountain-Garwin boys basketball team won a 59-27 rout over CAL as Jake Wall dropped in 16 points and Alex Dvorak added 11 points with six rebounds, four steals and three assists.

The Bobcat swimmers easily won there first dual of the season 122-63 over Boone as they took first in two of the three relay events and added seven individual firsts.

MHS girls’ basketball standout, Anne McFadden, a 6-1 senior forward, was ranked No. 23 in the state in scoring averaging 39.2 points per game after finishing nine games.

MHS girls’ bowling team edged past Fort Dodge to win a five-team girls’ bowling meet with 2,336 points as Meagan Taylor rolled a two-game 401 to lead Marshalltown.

The South Tama girls’ basketball squad ranked 20th in the state defeated Benton-Norway 52-39 as Kara Hempy led the scoring with 30 points.

The Bobcat girls’ basketball squad won sharply 74-50 over Newton as Anne McFadden and Janine Buresh led the offense with 42 and 15 points, respectively, while Judy Nieman had seven rebounds and seven steals and Lisa Sudenga grabbed seven rebounds and three steals.
