Senior guard Kacie Mathern. of GMG, was selected to the third team of Class 1A all -state team making her the first All-Stater in GMG girls’ basketball history.

With 15 minutes remaining in the game Matt Gazaway, former Marshalltown High School All-State basketball player, replaced the senior point guard ejected from the game and helped the team go on a 21-2 tear and defeated Christ College of Irvine 88-77 to win the NAIA Regional Tournament.

Todd Doyle, a student at Marshalltown’s Lenihan Junior High School won the Region VI spelling contest by correctly spelling “puissance” and finishing with “bagatelle” moving him forward to the state spelling bee along with third place finisher from Marshalltown Miller Junior High, Terri Breed.

Therese Kuhlman, a seventh grade home schooled student from Marshalltown, was the first place winner in the Patriot’s Pen Contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #839 and its Ladies Auxiliary.

Iowa Athletic Coaches Association named Hubbard-Radcliffe’s Lisa Brinkmeyer as 6-on-6 Miss Iowa Basketball placed her and teammate Shannon Nessa on the All-District Team for the North Central District.

Among the vocal students at SEMCO presenting the concert “That’s Entertainment” were: Melissa Anderson, Maralee Cory, Brent Smith, Jeri Paul and Lori Howard.

MHS boys’ basketball player Tyler Peschong carried the participation trophy off the court as the Bobcats were defeated by Linn-Mar 54-48 in overtime at the Boys State Basketball Tournament.

East Marshall boys placed Dan Berggren, Josh Dunham and Matt Knoll on the first team West Division All North Iowa Cedar League with Berggren and Dunham receiving unanimous selection.

Brad Weuve, the leading scorer on the 1977-78 Marshalltown Bobcat team with 16.7 points per game average and 7.6 rebounds per game was selected for the first team All-Big Eight Conference.

GMG seniors Cory Bacon and Kacie Mathern were selected to the all-Class 1A Region 6 squad by the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association averaging 11.4 and 16 points per game, respectively.

East Marshall Coffee Concert featured the talents of Show Choir members: Kara Crandon, Dayna Davis, Brian Wogen, Jodi Perry and Darin Wogen.

• 40 years ago in 1978

The Garwin Roughriders led by Brad Smoldt’s 25 points followed by Jerry Rohach, Ken Kulhavy and Brett Langenbau all scoring 10 points apiece defeated Gilbert 63-51 to gain a berth at the State Boys’ Basketball Tournament where they would match up with Lake View-Auburn.

Winners of the Open Fire Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution History Month essay contest were: Steve Kruse, BCLUW; Nadja Bernard, BCLUW; Steven Balvanz, Eldora-New Providence; Timothy Williams and Jessica Cole, E-NP and Troy Moore, BCLUW.

The basketball players from Pleasant Hill were scheduled to play for the championship game against Glenwood State Hospital at the state Special Olympics championship: Paul Jerome, Steve Stoops, Dale Bigbee, Jim Bradley, Lloyd Hughes, Ben Hoekstra, Gary Brooks, Doug Severe, Bill Hebert, Mike Abbas, Tim Patterson and Gerald Steffa.

BCLUW Middle School students Radney Kadner, Rachel Lloyd and Jenny Dillon went around downtown Union tying red ribbons in honor of Red Ribbon Week to bring awareness to drug abuse prevention.

Wayne Clayton was named one of 101 of the top ranked high school seniors in the midwest who were awarded a Regents Scholarship. Clayton’s award was a $650 scholarship from Wartburg College.

The Drake Bulldogs earned an automatic bid to the NCAA college basketball tournament with the 79-49 rout of Illinois State as walk-on and bench-warmer Adam Emmenecker was named the conference Most Valuable Player with 16 points and six assists for the game.

MHS senior Ryan Johnston was named to the second team of the 1992-93 all Central Iowa Metro League National Conference.

The Mighty Miller Mermaids of Heidi Stief, Kim McMaster, Nancy Booth, Sue Andrews and Lisa Lovig prepared for the annual synchronized swim show titled “Water Fantasies” which featured 16 different variety
