The West Marshall girls rode the three-hit pitching of Cindy Freese and 11-hit attack of its offense to down MHS 14-4 in five innings as teammates Bev Seeger and Kathy Sparks came through at the plate with Sparks going three-for-three including a home run and Seeger scoring three runs.

Daniel Montgomery, a GMG High School student, was awarded one of 30 Emerson Electric National Scholarship Grants and planned to use it at Iowa State University to study mechanical engineering.

The MHS boys 4×400 relay team of Tim Brennecke, Emmett Huston, Greg McKelvey and Mike Jorgensen ran the best time, 3.23.19, at the State Track Meet to give them the 2A Championship in that event.

MHS baseball player Zach Thompson’s two-run, two-out single in the top of the eighth inning in the nightcap and helped the Bobcats overcome a pair of scares by Des Moines Roosevelt as they won 6-5 in the first game and 9-5 in the closer.

Two kicks by freshman forwards Hannah Overstake and Lissa Duff captured the 2-1 overtime win against Ames which put the Bobcats one game away from the state tournament.

A 27-run outburst spread over two games helped the South Tama Trojans to capture the BCL-UW Memorial Day baseball tourney as they defeated the Comets in the championship game 14-2 and GMG in the first match up 13-2 landing Drew Weidner, Travis Savage, Nathan Roberts and Ryan Buhr on the all-tourney team.

Following a night with many errors, MHS pitcher Joni Thompson was able to mark one in the win column as a seventh-inning rally including the game winning hit by Julie Noid gave the Bobcats a 11-10 victory over Nevada.
