The GMG girls complemented a steady downpour of rain with an outpour of hits to defeat BCLUW 6-1 as pitcher Jeri Hartwig was dominent on the mound and at the plate added a double and a single.

Green Mountain’s Paul Krough and Julie Eich faced only 29 batters combined against Baxter as Krough struck out 15 of 17 batters in the 10-0 romp and Eich went 8 out of 12 batters throwing a perfect game, a 12-0 no-hitter.

BCLUW baseball squad scored a 14-4 mercy rule win over North Tama as Nick Hutchens hit a double and a single while teammates Shane Kruse and Austin Krause each added two hits for the Comets.

GMG baseball scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning and held on for an 8-7 victory over BCLUW with Kevin Groth smacking a two-run homer in the seventh inning.

Janet Soorholtz, of rural Melbourne and a West Marshall FFA member, showed the grand champion at the Summer Steer and Heifer Show at the Central Iowa Fair in the 1,180 pound Simmental-Hereford crossbred calf.

GMG pitcher Jami Boege threw a no-hitter as the Wolverines claimed a 9-0 victory over NU High with Boege striking out 12 batters in Class 1A, Region 7 postseason play.

In a double header the Marshalltown High School girls defeated Cedar Falls 14-4 in the opener and 12-1 in the nightcap as freshman Erin McElroy threw a solid six innings in the first and Rianne Pfaltzgraff led the offense at the plate in both games.

Jodi Breniman, of Marshalltown, showed the grand champion heifer, Jodi’s Miracle of 77, at the Poweshiek County Junior Angus Association Steer and Heifer Show.

In Class 2A, Region 5 softball action, BCLUW defeated Dike-New Hartford 6-1 as Andrea Cashin cased in at the plate with two hits including a double.

Amy Upah, daughter of Dan and Julie Upah, and Kyle Clark, son of Robert and Jane Clark, were crowned Little Queen and Little King in the July 4 festivities in Garwin.

Kathy Lively, of West Marshall, returned to the lineup following a knee injury to go 4-for-4 for the night with a single, two doubles and a triple to driven in two runs and lead the Trojanettes to a 7-1 win over North Polk.

Noah Scheidel, of Garwin, took a shot at the rock climbing wall sponsored by the National Guard during Garwin Freedom Days.

East Marshall used a 15-hit attack to crush Gladbrook-Reinbeck 15-2 in the championship game of the BCLUW Annual Fourth of July Baseball Tournament as Josh Dunham and Denny Allen led the offense with three hits each.

The LDf girls smacked 10 base hits and took advantage of 14 Baxter errors to win 16-4 as five girls accounted for the 10 hits led by Lisa Peterson, Lori Mann, Lisa Rouse, Deb Cooling and Kathy Vieth.

Julie Eich and the Green Mountain girls softball squad won the Ta-Ma-Ja Conference Championship with a 2-0 win over United of Boone with Eich throwing a no-hitter and striking out 14 batters.

In the battle of the Mustangs, East Marshall rose victorious with a 6-2 win over PCM in Class 2A District 13 baseball opening round as Shawn Bowers struck out six and walked only two batters.

MHS soccer teams rolled to a 9-0 victory over Mason City junior varsity and a 2-0 win in the varsity match as John Clark supplied both goals in the first half.

The Garwin Roughriders turned seven Gladbrook errors into points as they ripped the Panthers 13-1 with Brad Smoldt smacking a solo home run and Jeff Peshel adding a bases loaded triple.
