Green Mountain edged Garwin in the bottom of the eighth inning 2-1 as Dennis Balmer scored the winning run when the Garwin pitcher walked Bob Hessenius with the bases loaded.

The 10-year-old Marshalltown Little League All Stars won the District 3 finals beating Urbandale 5-4. The All Stars consisted of: Ross Randall, Sam Weatherman, Jack Greene, Josh Sowers, Dallas Blackford, Luke Severson, Tony Smith, Sam Rogers, Jared Johnson, Grant Judkins, Aaron Hauser and Devon Mann.

Marshalltown High School baseball team was credited with an errorless game as they defeated Urbandale 1-0 as Dan Hartwig scored in the first inning off a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Patrick Hagen.

Rosemary Uchytil, 18, of Toledo, became the second member of her family crowned Miss Tama County following in her big sister Jean’s footsteps from 1972.

The East Marshall Mustang softball team stopped MHS in a 12-1 victory as Lisa Randall and Kathi Eggleston led the offense with two singles each.

Jim Knuth ripped at two-run homer in the fifth inning and added a RBI triple to lead the West Marshall Trojans to a 7-2 win over Colfax and the sectional championship moving them on to district action.

At the Quad Cities Junior Matches Drayton Lents was first in the 13-year-old division; Zach Underhill was second in the 12-year-old division; Beau Ragland was third in the 11-year-old division and Stephen Peng was third in the 10-year-old division after the first day.

Bianca Adland, Anson Middle School, was the first student ever to accept the FINE (First in the Nation in Education) award from Gov. Terry Branstad. Eight schools in Iowa received the award.

Tracy Wildman pounded out three hits in three tines at bat, drove in four runs and scored once himself in the 8-5 victory over Des Moines Lincoln only to solidify the true meaning to his last name.

BCLUW girls took a 9-1 win over Grundy Center in sectional action as pitcher Jane Smith led in both sides of the plate as she smacked a three-run homer in the sixth.

West Marshall’s Kathy Lively and Cindy Freese were repeat first team selection on the 1978 Heart of Iowa All-Conference first team and joining them were Bev Seeger and Julie Gaunt.

Cory McAnelly was awarded the Grand Lodge Outstanding Service Commendation Award for donating his time and labor in helping the Marshalltown Elks Lodge #312 with their printing needs as well as other Elks service projects.

West Marshall advanced to the finals in 1A sectional play as they defeated CMB 5-2 while pitcher Nikki Tollefson finished with a three-hitter struck out nine and walked none.

Doug McKelvey, Rt. 1, showed his champion Alpine goat, Willow Wood Lightning, which was best doe in the 1978 Butler County Fair and took top honors as the top purebred Alpine.

The Bobcat baseball team rolled past Cedar Falls in the Class 4A district semifinal 7-2 as pitcher Scott Thiessen allowed only two hits and struck out seven.

The MHS Bobcats slipped past Grinnell 2-1 as Tim Brennecke struck out 14 batters as Dan Clayton became the hero when he slipped a single through the right side of the infield and brought home Brian Mead for the winning run.
