Jacob Butler, Marshalltown High School golfer, tied with two others for the best score at the Mark Mann Invitational with a 73 while Jamie Bjorkman and John Ryan both shot a 74 and Jordan Alley finished with a 76 to smoke the field with a 297 total for the win.

Vocal students of Carol Barth: Jillian Meyer, Kara Friedman, Jessie Weaver, Mindy VanGundy, Jamie McKibben, Leslie Schafer, Sara Sharp, Courtney Fulton and Elizabeth Bormann rehearsed for the performance at the Hope United Methodist Church which featured soloists Meyer and VanGundy.

Lyon Jerseys, of Toledo, were the reserve champions in the Jersey Females, Junior Category at the Iowa State Fair and a bull owned by Mysha Farms, of New Providence, was selected as the reserve champion in the Milking Shorthorn Bull Class.

Colo-NESCO football player Josh Gaedke ran for 110 yards and made 12 takes as teammate Austin Wilson took a Travis Guy in for 92 yards in the 24-6 dousing of NU High to open the season.

For the first time ever at the Iowa State Fair there were seven winners of the on-the-portion of 4-H Beef of Merit Show with Nathan Huston representing the Marshall County 4-H winning the hotel-restaurant class.

The Green Mountain girls softball team rallied in the seventh inning with four runs to defeat Colo 5-4 as Lori Petermeier hit a two-run triple.

The Bobcats held Sioux City North in check as Eric Michael, who led the ‘Cats with 97 yards on 16 carries, scored the game winning touch down on a 39-yard run in the 27-21 victory.

University of Northern Iowa graduates included area students: Denise Coulter, of Beaman; Cynthia Busch, of Gladbrook; Lynette Hoover, Karen Loupee, Heather Peterson, Faye Thompson and Matthew Tullis with highest honors, all from Marshalltown.

Connie Greiner spent two months in Wiesbaden, Germany, as a Youth for Understanding student, a guest in the home of Ursula and Carl Heinz Kluger who also took her on a vacation to Bavaria Switzerland and Austria.

Hannah Hibbs, a member of the Liscomb Lively Laborers, won the Window B-High Quality Grid with her black/white face steer. Her 1,345 pound steer gained 3.61 pounds per day.

The BCL girls’ softball team whipped Parkersburg 12-1 in five innings in the second round of the BCL-GM Invitational Tournament as Tess Koch ripped a three-run single in the five-run fourth inning.

MCC men’s soccer minus eight of their line-up due to team rules violation, were still unstoppable. Harvey Martinez got MCC on the board first and Will Lewis added to the score for a 2-0 lead at halftime as it was all MCC in the second half for the 6-0 win over Scott Community College.

The Marshalltown foursome of Bob Davis, Charles Fairall, Dean Vaughn and John Wantiez won the American Cancer Society of Iowa state golf championship and were headed to compete in the national tournament.

West Marshall All-State pitcher Cindy Freese threw a no-hitter shutout in the 10-0 win over Green Mountain to put them in the championship game of the BCL-GM Invitational Tournament.

A foreign exchange student from Switzerland German named Benjamin Bolla was scheduled to attend MHS through the Youth for Understanding program and would live with the Joseph and Peggy Hannam family.

The GMG volleyball squad started off with a win in the 15-10, 15-10 and 15-5 victory over Belle Plaine as Carrie Boldt slammed 14 of her 15 spikes successfully for six kills and Deb Michels led the team in aces with seven.

Hubbard’s softball squad came up with a 6-0 shutout of Dayton in the Stanhope Tournament as catcher Linda Mosch smacked two doubles and drove in two runs.
