Gladbrook-Reinbeck opened its volleyball season with a clean sweep of GMG: 25-10, 25-14 and 25-6 as G-R senior Rose Koester had seven kills and five aces on 19-for-21 serves.

MHS boys golf squad won the quadrangular with West Des Moines Dowling, Des Moines Roosevelt and Urbandale shooting a 146 as David Briggs earned medalist honors with a 32.

West Marshall softball player Sue Bartine hit a grand slam home run in the first inning against Hudson to cap a seven-run outburst for the 12-5 win in the championship game of the BCL-GM Invitational Softball Tournament.

Jake Sherman and Tom Robinson were part of the Cub Scout campaign to recruit boys in first through fifth grades for the new year with areas of interest in: pinewood derby racing, BB guns, archery, leather work and more.

East Marshall fifth grader Holly Hulin had a framed letter from President Bill Clinton in response to a video sent to hin when the students were in fourth grade as part of the P.R.O.S.P.E.C.T. program for talented and gifted students.

Seven Youth for Understanding students from six countries were attending and living in Central Iowa: Masachi Ichinose, of Japan; Alie Blaauw, The Netherlands; Stefanie Richter, of Germany; Andreas Buck, of Germany; Monica Paetau, from Mexico; Ari-Heikki, Finland and Fernanda D’Andrea, of Argentina.

The 10th-ranked MHS cross country squad took first place at the Urbandale Invitational with its top seven runners finishing in 19th place or under as Logan Swarts finished second, Patrick Fink, third and Eric Shomo, fourth.

The Carpet Rollers came through with a fourth place finish in the National 16-Inch Slow Pitch Tournament, the finish matched the best ever for an Iowa team.

The Steamboat Rock baseball team defeated Grand High School of Boxholm 11-1 in five innings as pitcher Jeff Daleske fired a two-hitter striking out nine batters and Roger Belknap went 3-for-4 adding two singles and a double to drive in two runs.

The Bobcats scored 51 points in their season opener to defeat Des Moines North 51-14 as Nick Thimesch had four receptions for 82 yards, Allen Mann finished with two receptions for 80 yards and Eric Michael led on the ground with 69 yards rushing and one touchdown.

David Briggs earned medalist honors with a 74 as he led the MHS golfers to the team championship by one point with a 318 at the Fort Dodge Invitational.

The MHS cross country squad kicked off the new season with a triangular victory over West Waterloo and Waverly-Shell Rock as Todd Arnold captured first place.

Students from Marshalltown Christian School made Grandparents cards for their newly “adopted” grandparents at the Iowa Veterans Home and sand songs to entertain the veterans as they delivered the cards.

Crista Whaley, of Albion, a nine-year member of the Albion Ables 4-H Club won pony showmanship honors at the 1993 Iowa State Fair 4-H Horse Show.

The BCL softball team moved to 3-1 for the season as they shut-out Dysart-Geneseo 10-0 with Lana Adams leading the team at the plate delivering two singles and driving in three runs.

Kelly Brockett, of Reinbeck, received a certificate of recognition for her artwork submitted for the “From Farm to You” calendar which was distributed by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship at the Iowa State Fair.

The MHS volleyball squad served up a quick 15-2, 15-0 and 15-3 victory over Mason City as the Bobcats placed 88 percent of their serves led by junior Rebecca Alberts flawless 11 attempts.

• 40 years ago in 1978

The West Marshall Trojanettes moved to 5-0 for the season as they defeated Green Mountain 8-1 with Teri Zink and Dianne Rohrer leading the offense with two hits each.
