West Marshall volleyball players Jordan Weitzell had six aces serves and teammate Kylie Davis finished with four kills in the 25-18, 25-15 victory over Madrid.

The GMG Wolverine volleyball squad topped Hudson 15-8, 15-0 and 15-6 in a clean sweep as Jeri Hartwig hit 14-of-15 serves, had five blocks and hit 5-of-7 spikes for two aces.

A 67-yard pass from quarterback Dave Ritland to speedster George Naughton on a fourth and 10 situation with 1:47 remaining on the clock gave Marshalltown High School a 13-9 win over Des Moines Lincoln.

The Bobcat cross country squad annihilated nine other teams including No. 3 ranked West Des Moines Valley and No. 4 Cedar Falls to come out on top of the Bobcat Invitational as Charlie Kelly dominated the field for first place.

The Green Mountain girls capitalized on a Steamboat Rock error in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 9-8 win in the championship game of the Iowa Star Conference softball tournament as Rhonda Groth belted out two hits and drove in two runs to lead the Mounties.

The 2008 GMG Homecoming Court consisted of: Kayla Kienzle, Jacob Wall, Angie Upah, Aaron Judge, Kim Mooney, Cade Holub, Jessie Kunch, Brad Holloway, Kelsey Sederburg and Arley Beane.

West Marshall Trojans rebounded fron the loss to Nevada with a 28-7 victory over North Polk as Craig Goecke led the Trojans with 135 yards on 20 carries and Brian Smith totaled 91 yards on 13 attempts.

David Maxfield received an ESTARL award of a $500 grant from the Order of the Eastern Star to pursue religious education.

Class 4A No. 1-ranked West Des Moines Valley edged the No. 9, second place Bobcats 55-59 at the Bobcat Invitational on a stormy day on the Iowa Veterans Home grounds in a field of 16 teams with Ankeny coming in a distant third with 118 points.

The West Marshall volleyball squad defeated GMG 5-15, 15-9 and 15-13 to capture the GMG volleyball tournament as Liza Buck hit for 38-of -42 serves and 12 aces while Trisha Huntrods hit 42-of-46 serves for four aces and Sharon Blood hit 53-of -63 with 17 kills and three blocks for the whole tournament.

Jodi Vokoon and Kathy Coulthard, Anson Elementary students, brought stuffed animals to school to research the types, weights, sizes, colors and other important details as a way to get to know other students in the class.

The GMG Wolverines football team stomped visiting Highland 35-0 as Brad Holloway had 16 rushes for 129 yards and Ben Krull ran for 85 yards and two touchdowns.

The Royals of Colo-NESCO captured first place in their tournament as they defeated Northeast Hamilton 16-14 and lost 15-12, whipped Gilbert 15-9 and 15-7 and ended up the overall winner by points as Kerri Larson led the Royals going 26-of-28 with eight aces.

Rachel Brown received a gold pin signifying more than 300 hours of volunteer service as a candy striper at Marshalltown Area Community Hospital while Jennifer Mauldin was awarded two stripes on her hat as a senior candy striper.

Carly Kielman, member of the Rhodes Ravens 4-H Club, gave an educational presentation at the Iowa State Fair on Pet First Aid and received a Merit Award while Dani Honeck, of the Central Iowa 4-H Club, presented “Bleach Out” for an Excellence Award at the State Fair.

Ashley Kelly, 12, tumbling champion from Laurel won a gold medal in the tumbling championships at the 1993 National Junior Olympics Games.

Kathy Ryden swan her way into the record books twice as she set a new school record in the 200 yard individual medley and the 100 yard backstroke as MHS defeated East Waterloo 54-29.
