The BCLUW boys cross country team won its second straight title at the Nevada Invitational as Dane McDonald finished second in a time of 16:42; Sam Goodman, third and Tyler Sunkle finished seventh.

The GMG girls volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat East Marshall 15-7, 9-15, 13-15, 16-16 and 15-5 with Mary Langenbau leading GMG going 28-for-35 spikes with three blocks and eight kills.

The Royal Court at Marshalltown High School who waited to see which would be crowned queen were: Kim Younge, Lori Zink, Lori Blazek, Deanna Stalzer and Bonnie Barten.

MHS cross country varsity boys had three finishes in the top 10 led by Jimma James in fifth place, Logan Swarts, ninth and Patrick Fink, 10th to take the Iowa City West Invitational with 51 points.

BCLUW Royalty for 1993 were Nathan Duden and Amber Moeller as king and queen with first graders Tyler Blackburn and Jill Penick as the crown bearers.

Jim Mosher, of Liscomb, was one of 31 Iowa 4-Her’s named state 4-H award winners and delegates to the National 4-H Congress.

West Marshall students selected Stephanie Schulte and Austin Nichols as its 2008 Homecoming queen and king.

Marci Clayberg, a sophomore at MHS, was installed as the new president of the 9th & 10th Y-Teens Club.

MHS cross country senior and co-captain Todd Arnold set a new MHS school record at the Columbus Invitational with a time of 9:30.5 coming in second only to Mason City’s Ken Rose who finished with a 9:29.

The No. 8 ranked Bobcats swim team defeated Cedar Rapids Washington 107-78 as Meredith Johnson was on four winning events, Lauren Mason, three events and Macaela McCarville led a 1-2-3 Bobcat finish in the 500 yard freestyle.

The MHS Homecoming Royal Court was for queen: Angie Stahl, Dena Lovell, Libby Fruin, Jaimie Deibert, Emily Ott, Tiffany VanGundy and Amy Neldeberg; king candidates were: Mike Taylor, Wes Waterback, Todd Hirsch, Pani Baccam, Troy Eygabroad, Damon Henry and Chad Anson.

Five MHS students: Karen Shultz, Kim Younge, Jana Manz, John Haney and Fauna Mohler were seeking state offices during the Distributive Education Clubs of America Delegate Assembly.

MHS football player, Allen Mann, hauled in four touchdown passes in the 40-34 win over Newton at Newton ending a three-game losing streak.

MHS girls cross country squad took the Eldora-New Providence Invitational with 24 points as Michelle Peter, Amanda English, Karen Bomar and Shanna Steward finished fourth, fifth, sixth and ninth in the meet.

• 40 years ago in 1978

The NESCO girls softball team broke a six game losing streak to the West Marshall Trojanettes when Denise Eley’s single RBI in the bottom of the fifth inning gave NESCO a 1-0 victory and the District Championship.

The MHS sophomore football team saw Alex Hoop throw for 454 yards and seven touchdowns in the 65-50 slugfest over Newton as both teams nearly amassed 1,200 yards total offense.

• 25 years ago in 1993

Kyle Brown, 18, of Laurel, showed the Division II grand champion in the 4-H Market Swine Show during the 1993 Ak-Sar-Ben Livestock Show & Exposition with his 243 pound crossbred Yorkshire-Hampshire-Duroc gilt.

LDF senior girls chosen as Homecoming finalists were: Tracy Clingerman, Lori Mann, Brenda Shuler, Lisa Rouse and Lisa Peterson.

MHS senior Mohammed Portillo ran in his first cross country race of the season and was the junior varsity boys individual champion at the Norwalk Invitational to lead the JV to the team title.

• 25 years ago in 1993

Four MHS students were named Commended Students in the 1994 National Merit Scholarship Program for their performance in the 1992 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test: Blair Heiserman, Micah Hill, Tammy Sargent and Natalie Swalla.

• 40 years ago in 1978

Lori Blazek was crowned the 1978 MHS Homecoming Queen and would reign over the Friday night football game against Fort Dodge and the Saturday night dance.
