North Tama shut out North Mahaska 20-0 in the opening round of the Class 1A state playoffs as Wyatt Hanus finished the night going 14-for-27 passing for 166 yards and two touchdowns and Brendon Boerm has a team high four catches for 79 yards.

The SEMCO Cougars defeated North Mahaska 26-0 in the final game of the season to remain co-champions with LDF in the Ta-Ma-Ja Conference while Greg Plum and Scott Stalzer led the offense with 142 and 141 yards, respectively.

The MHS gymnasts finished fourth in the State Gymnastics Meet with Mark Wuest grabbing a seventh place finish in the all around and a sixth place finish in the vault as teammates Bruce Stichter took eighth in the Pommel Horse and Jon Kriegel placed eighth in the vault.

Lisa Underhill, of East Marshall High School, was chosen for the 1993 All-State Chorus.

Two MHS band students: Marian Peterson and Monica Keown were selected for the All-State Band.

East Marshall High School prepared for their presentation of the musical “Beauty and the Beast” starring Jane Barnum as Belle and Jeremiah Fuller as the Beast.

The Bobcat girls’ swim team took third place at the state swimming and diving meet as Stacey Spooner set a new school record in the 50-yard freestyle and helped two relay teams set school records, the 200 yards medley relay and the 200 yard freestyle relay team.

Julianne Haywood, of Union, won the district RAVE contest with a vocal solo accompanied by her sister Cheryl which qualified her for the state contest in Des Moines.

MHS football player Scott Hughes was the recipient of the Bobcat’s Most Valuable Player for the 1978 Season and the winner of the Nick Norris Award.

Three school records fell as the Bobcat swim team placed ninth in the Iowa Girls’ State Swimming and Diving Championships with the 200 yard freestyle team of Meredith Johnson, Emily Visser, Anna Buzbee, and Lauren Mason set a new record; Johnson broke her 50-yard freestyle record and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Johnson, Sam Beals, Visser and Mason earned all-state status shaving two seconds off their seed time and finishing in sixth place.

“Illinois Pete” was the Miller Middle School fall play starring Bryan Bergmann as Illinois Pete, Samantha Gervich as Holly Lassiter, Aaron Cocking as Phineas T. Fobbs and Bethany Pucker as Elinor.

Julian Thaddeus Springer (J.T.), a ridiculed teenage boy in this world escapes to the dream world of the 1950s in which he can do no wrong. J.T. is played by Brad Grossman in this LDF Drama Department production of “The Short Happy Madness of Julian Thaddeus Springer.”

West Marshall junior running back Drake Ferch was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player of the all-Class 2A District 7 football team.

The South Tama Trojan football team had six players on the All-District first team: Dan Anderson, Matt Olsen, Justin Ray, Bryan Bird, Brandon Rutledge and Travis Savage and four players named academic all-district: Tony Delancy, Justin Ray, Ryan Ridout and Jake Lamb.

MHS football players were named to Big-8 all conference teams: Scott Hughes was on the first team defense and Scott Kilstrom was on the second team defense.
