Unit C students at Fisher Elementary: Tim Weitzel, Missy Estes, Amy Leeper and Lori Springer each buried a time capsule with artifacts from their time with the hopes of digging them up when they are adults with children of their own.

Melodie Hamilton, a junior at Coe College, was awarded the Ray and Esther Bryant Scholarship Endowment Fund for the 1978-79 school year. She is a music major concentrating on performance in the French horn.

American Education Week was celebrated at Rogers Elementary by students Adam Tuttle, Kristy Brown, Kate Greer and Cody Peters who presented their principal with a proclamation signed by the mayor.

MHS Cross Country standouts Charlie Kelly and Dustin Weaver were honored as all-state, all-district and all-conference winners and Kelly set a new school record of 15:24.4 which was also the new school sophomore record.

Iowa State University freshman basketball player Ashley Allen led her Cyclones to a 77-45 victory over UMKC scoring 12 points and pulling down nine rebounds.

The MHS girls’ swim team placed third at the state swim meet and broke these school records: Stacey Spooner, 50 yard freestyle and 200 free; Heather Rouse, 100 yard breaststroke; the 200 yard medley relay team of Susan Miriovsky, Rouse, Tara Sondall and Spooner and the 200 freestyle relay team of Sondall, Rouse, Katie Bloom and Spooner.

West Marshall football players Guy West on offense and Dan Billman and Marty Sutten on defense were named to the Heart of Iowa All-Conference first team.
