Iowa State University sophomore Kelsey Bolte scored a season high 21 points and 13 Cyclones entered the scoring column as the ISU women’s basketball team annihilated Niagara 89-39 during the first round of the Cyclone Challenge.

Teresa Schutte was all smiles as she laughingly held on to a plastic snow saucer which was being pulled by the pony King as Mandy Jervis started the pony into a gallop on the hills at the Iowa Veterans Home.

Former MHS all-state guard Matt Gazaway, a junior guard at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Calif., started the first eight games for his team and was a catalyst in the 96-66 pair of victories against NAIA foes as he scored 28 points with 12 assists and six steals.

William L. Ormston was one of 18 sectional winners recognized for accomplishments in the Veterinary Program at the awards banquet during the 4-H Club Congress.

The MHS junior varsity basketball team defeated Newton 73-58 with five players in double figures: Kenny Diggins, 17 points; Jeff Kelling, 13, Matt Schilling and Jason Woehler, 11 points and Ben Stonewall with 10.

The third ranked Mustangs of East Marshall ran their record to 7-0 as they romped past the Hubbard-Radcliffe boys 78-35 with Dan Berggren shooting 14 points with six rebounds and five assists; Matt Knoll going for 12, Kevin Thompson adding 11 and four rebounds and Casey Waite following with 10 points and five rebounds.

The Bobcat girls reaped revenge on Newton 73-61 as three forwards had strong showings: Shari Wolfs shot 28 points, Angie Jensen added 21 points and Donna Buchwald dropped in 19 points.

The sophomore boys basketball squad for MHS went to 5-0 for the season as they defeated West Des Moines Valley 60-54 with Trent Trowbridge scoring 26 points to pace the ‘Cats and Khor Kong adding 13 points and a team-high six rebounds while Josh Illum added 10 points.

The Bobcat swimmers nailed a win over Boone 97-86 as Jordan Calloway won the diving scoring 219.75 points; sophomore Mark Koenigs took first in the individual medley and freshman Chad Hill won the 100 breaststroke along with all three relay teams coming in first.

MHS has its crew of Sue Andrews, Lori Springer and Debbie Lukehart for its sophomore wrestling cheerleaders.
