On Monday, the usual lunch and meeting rituals were presided over by Marshalltown Noon Lions President Wally Paige.

Allan Thoreson, program director, introduced Linda Von Holten, volunteer coordinator of Central Iowa RSVP. RSVP, a national program with units across the country, originated in 1971 with the inception of The War on Poverty. In each locality it oversees efforts that connect older citizens with volunteer opportunities.

Four counties are linked in the Central Iowa chapter of RSVP. The programs offered demonstrate that benefits accrue not only for those served but for those providing the volunteer efforts. The Marshall County United Way is a supporting organization.

Von Holten cited a few examples of the many programs offered in Marshall County by RSVP. Among these is a Reading Buddy program where retirees read one-on-one with elementary students to elevate literacy skills. Another is the Gardening Mentor program working with students in elementary schools. Children undertake raising vegetables and other plants from seed to table.

Transportation, delivering meals, weatherization efforts and many other projects involving volunteers are also implemented by RSVP.

The RSVP Mission statement reads: “Enhance the lives of adults 55 and older by connecting them with rewarding volunteer experiences that meet community needs.” Von Holten stated that anyone wishing more information on meaningful opportunities for volunteer work may access such information by means of www.rsvpvolunteer.org. They may also call the Marshalltown office at 641-752-0279.

President Paige reminded the club that assistance with processing used glasses is always needed and that the club will meet at the Lions Park on May 22.

Thoreson announced that at the next regular meeting on May 8, Jessica Kinser, city administrator, will present the program.
