GiGi’s Playhouse topic at Evening Lions

The Marshalltown Evening Lion’s met last Wednesday night at the Salvation Army. After calling the club to order, saying the Pledge of Allegiance, singing “My Country tis of Thee” and giving an invocation, the club enjoyed a meal. President Janelle Hawk then introduced, Kelcy Gabriel, representing the Marshalltown Director for GiGi’s Playhouse: Down Syndrome Achievement Centers.

Gabriel explained her background and involvement with GiGi’s Playhouse and the 31 one-of-a-kind achievement centers around the country and Mexico for individuals with Down Syndrome. Her son, Carter, is one the Marshalltown participants in a Literacy Tutoring Program, held at the Public Library, that helps develop student’s physical, educational and social skills in a once a week session. Some of the long-term goals for GiGi’s Playhouse in Marshalltown is to open the program up to more individuals in Marshalltown and to add Math tutoring as well. Anyone interested in volunteering or supporting this worthwhile program is urged to contact the playhouse at marshalltownliteracytutoring @gmail.com or by calling 712-301-8478 or contacting Tom and Kelcy Gabriel or Roger and Ellen Brown.

Thank you’s were read to the club from the Crime Stoppers and the Salvation Army PAL programs, to which the Evening Lions have recently donated. Club members were reminded to sell and turn in slips for the joint Peach Lug Sales campaign by Aug. 7 and that peach pick-up day is Aug. 12 at 811 E. Main St., in Marshalltown. The Evening Lions are reminded to sign up to help sell bags of popcorn on Saturdays at Meadow Lane Mall and for Haverhill Days on July 29 and 30.

Anyone interested in visiting the club and helping the Evening Lions with their many projects to help others, can call 641-750-4512 or email President Janelle Hawk at lionjanelle@gmail.com.
