Anson third grader Gavin Barrett continued the tradition of playing Cap Anson in the Eighth annual Marshalltown Third Grade History Pageant.

Children at the Pioneer Heritage Library in Le Grand: Nathan Balk, Melissa Richardson, Brandon Bucklin, Kara Ihde, Cassidy Wolf, Jacob Bucklin, Jacob Dannen and Zachary Dannen learned about fire safety from local firefighter Matt Ihde.

Marshalltown High School girls track team opened the season with a 121-21 victory over Grinnell as Beth Karsjens took both the shot put and the discus, senior Deb Swenson shattered the school record in the long jump, won the 880-yard run and assisted the distance medley relay team of Kim Younge, Kris Condie and Sue Eichorn to their win and the two-mile relay squad of Cathy Breinig, Janine Buresh, Terese Devig and Kelley Fairall set a new track record on the way to their win.

The Bobcat boys’ hurdlers had a great night against Des Moines East, Des Moines Lincoln, Newton and Southeast Polk as Kellyn Fogarty led MHS’ 1-2-3 showing in the 400 hurdles with a time of 54.88 seconds; Tyler Devick, second, 57.21 and Alex Benda, third, at 59.52. Devick also went on to win the 110 high hurdles.

Two members of the MHS orchestra won first places at the Iowa High School Music Association state contest: Mary Kay Yokum, cello, and Amy Bradbury, who excelled in the superior category with a perfect score on the violin.

Outstanding Performer awards were given to Sandra Smith, interpretive poetry; Jule Eichorn, extemporaneous speaking and Jeff Kenner, literary program at the 1977 State High School Individual Speech Contest.

MHS took first place at the Iowa High School Team Chess Championships with the team of: Ben Anzis, Jaleb Jay, Rees Uhlenberg, Ryan Uhlenberg and Will Lindell, of Excel.

Paul Seberger, Anson Middle School eighth grade publications class writer, won the Knights of Columbus quincentennial essay contest and received a $100 savings bond.

Melodie Hamilton, senior at MHS, was named a winner of the Schauwecker music scholarship at Coe College.

The ninth grade AAU Apgar Cats consisting of: Staci Hillygus, Kallie Schive, Courtney Simons, Cassidy Miller, Shalla Quigley, Maira Schaumburg, Stephanie Quigley and Mehlon Maxwell placed first in a tournament at Lenihan.

Doug Beane, son of Dan and Sarah Beane, of rural Garwin, was selected to serve on the 1991 Agriculture Student Council at Iowa State University representing the International Agriculture Club.

Jeff Isgrig, of Marshalltown, and Jeff Stevens, of Colo, were two area seniors named to play in the North/South Shrine All-Star Football game.

Joshua Atcher, son of Steven and Pam Atcher, and Brandon Baker, son of Randy and Susan Baker, were selected to participate in the Celebration Iowa Singers and Jazz Band with Atcher singing tenor and Baker playing trombone during the summer performance tour.

• 25 years ago in 1992

A team of Green Mountain-Garwin Junior High students consisting of: Mishelle Hay, Laurel Knapp, Ryan Schulte, Ryan Van Haaften participated in the Iowa Future Problem Solving State Bowl with Aaron Farnsworth competing as an individual.

• 40 years ago in 1977

Kim Mills, MHS senior, was one of 85 seniors who submitted artwork in scholarship competition at the University of Northern Iowa and was one of six recipients of a four-year, tuition free art scholarship.

MHS students Stacy Galema, Alyssa Mathews and Brandon Barnes won first and second places at Iowa’s Future Business Leaders of America conference. Barnes took first in Job Interview and Mathews was second in Business Calculations with Galema, second in Advanced Word Processing.

The BCL-U-W Comets captured first place in the triangular track meet with North Tama and Grundy Center as Keri Norman had a big day winning the long jump at 14-3, the 400 meter dash, anchored the winning sprint medley relay team and ran on the winning 4×400 relay team.

Brian Cibula, of South Tama, won the No. 1 singles match and teamed with Doug Wood to capture the No. 1 doubles event in the South Tama boys tennis team opener as they won 5-4 over Oskaloosa.

Marshalltown Community College Outstanding Students of the Year were: Katie Murray, Allison Clark, Maria Gonzalez, Melissa Jensen, Barb Headley, Kyle Koester, Abby Durnil, Jeremiah Kouba and Kristen Crozier.

• 25 years ago in 1992

The Bobcat girls golf squad topped South Tama 203-228 with Amy Westberg taking medalist honors with a score of 47 followed by Megan Burger, 48, Katie McKibben, 52, and Sarah Briggs with a 56.

• 40 years ago in 1977

Greta Melberg and Roberta Chaloupek squared off as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum in skits of famous Disney characters presented by Unit C students at Fisher Elementary.
