The Marshalltown High School eighth grade distance medley team of Alaina Severson, Lindsay Bruns, Lydia Martin and Sarah Arnold placed sixth in the 2007 Mike Henderson Girls Junior High Track & Field State Meet held in Ankeny.

The West Marshall softball team took two from Gilbert belting 12 base hits in the first to win 13-0 and 17 hits in the nightcap for a 10-1 victory as Betsy Berrey, Kim Baker, Carrie Johnson and Lisa Zeller spearheaded the offense.

• 40 years ago in 1977

The MHS baseball team crushed West Waterloo 11-0 as Jeff Isgrig threw a 1-hit victory in the first game and Tim Brennecke held the Warhawks scoreless in the first four innings of the second game as Isgrig completed the 8-1 win.

The young Bobcats softball squad prevailed 5-2 in the opener over Ames behind Jennifer Schoborg’s second straight sterling pitching performance and in the second game freshman Sam Mitchell’s first varsity victory was a 1-0 shutout.

Mark Koenigs, Miller Middle School student, placed second in the state at the 8th Grade Math Bee out of 200 students while the Miller team of: Adam Thurston, Koenigs, Katie Bloom and Ben Hagen took seventh place out of 50 teams.

• 40 years ago in 1977

Grundy Center’s Kay Riek, a freshman, won three times at the state tennis tournament, losing only once to the second place finisher, to capture third place in the state.

An 8-run fifth inning ended AGWSR’s misery as the East Marshall baseball team 10-runned their host 14-4 as Shawn Bower’s hit his first home run of the season and along with Josh Knutson, Devon Eash, Ben Dilger, Jake Edwards and Rob Paxton led the offense at the plate.

• 25 years ago in 1992

The Bobcat baseball team took 14 walks, six wild pitches and five errors and turned them into a 15-14 victory over Newton to go to 6-0 for the season.

• 40 years ago in 1977

Maxwell took a pair from LDF defeating the girls 10-3 and handing the boys a 9-2 loss after a 7-run burst in the third inning.

The BCLUW softball squad behind Jamie Fisher’s 3-hit shutout handed Class 2A No. 10 AGWSR its second straight loss with a 2-0 victory.

Amy Lander, Wendy Clayberg and Sarah Briggs prepared for a prom dress program at the Christian Women’s Club brunch.

• 40 years ago in 1977

The Green Mountain Mounties baseball team slammed Maxwell 15-1 as Brian Weitzell smashed a grand slam home run going 3-for-3 at the plate for the evening.

The GMG softball team scored six runs in the fifth inning en route to an 8-1 win over CAL as Jessie Kunch led the offense with two hits including a triple.

• 25 years ago in 1992

The Green Mountain-Garwin Wolverines softball squad took two games at the Gladbrook Tournament beating Gladbrook-Reinbeck 12-9 and North Tama 7-6 as Darci Frahm, Jami Hartwig and Heidi Haynes added a double and single in the first and Kris Ruff smashed a 2-run double in the second game.

Rose Queen hopefuls for 1977 were: Catherine Walkup, Kimberly Riemenschneider, Gwen Halsted, Lorei Garrels and JoDee Davis.

East Marshall pitcher Kayla Blocker gave the Mustangs county bragging rights as she pitched a 6-0 shutout against West Marshall with Aurora Bloom, Kenzie Madison and Jessie Lee leading the offense.

• 25 years ago in 1992

The LDF-SEMCO boys and girls took Aplington for two as the boys won 16-6 with Josh Dunham going 3-for-4 and knocking in six runs. The girls were victorious 3-1 as Kara Shultz improved to 4-0 striking out six.

Bret Williams was named the winner of the 1977 Don E. Weatherman Award presented to the Miller Junior High track star that scored the most team points during the season.

Ben Noe, sophomore at MHS, cleared a path through the woods at Marshalltown Community College and built an elevated boardwalk trail by the pond for his Eagle Scout Project to gain the highest rank in Boy Scouting.

Eight West Marshall girls were candidates for the Rose Festival Queen: Andrea Burggraaf, Karrie Moore, Gretchen Jones, Stacey Karsjens, Heather Scales, Pam Bartine, Emily Taylor and Emily Halter.

Julie Goodman came within one batter of pitching a perfect game over six innings as the West Marshall Trojanettes rolled to an 11-0 victory over Johnston.
