The Marshalltown High School boys golf squad easily defeated Des Moines East on the Grandview Golf Course 143-176 as Tommy Craft shot an even par 34 to take medalist honors.

Crystal Prusha, 9, of Toledo, and her sister April, 13, were first place winners for their ostriches at the Hartman’s International Ostrich Classic in Omaha, Neb., after showing the male and female weighing between 100-150 pounds standing six to seven feet tall which took first place in the 6-12-months-old pair category.

The state’s third rated girls softball team, the West Marshall Trojanettes, open the fall softball season with a 24-0 rout of SEMCO as All-State first teamer, Kathy Lively, hit a two-run homer, Julie Gaunt smashed a two-run triple and All-State second team pitcher Cindy Freese struck out 10 batters.

The MHS volleyball team nailed West Des Moines Dowling as senior Tahler Johnson came back with a vengeance from a back injury with 12 kills, 11 ace serves and five blocks in the three-game sweep 25-19, 25-10 and 25-11.

Pete Peterson, a member of the Dunbar Rustlers, opted to show a sheep at the Iowa State Fair after his 4-H steer died of pneumonia. The 129 pound Suffolk was named grand champion market lamb.

The Thimble Theater production of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” featured the talents of Megan Smith as Snow White; Cally Brooks as Dopy; Julie McCright as Happy; Lisa Manchon as Grumpy and Alyson Payne as Doc.

The Marshalltown girls swim team opened the season against Dowling Catholic High School with a 101-85 victory as Laura Mason captured four first place finishes: the 200 individual medley, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle medley and the 400 relay.

The children of the First Baptist Church presented the musical “Fat, Fat, Jehoshaphat” which starred: David Mull, Jimmy Carmichael, Travis Appelgate, Brandon Wunn, Sam Speas, Neil Shanks and Tim Nichols.

At the Girls Fall Invitational softball tournament Green Mountain disposed of Parkersburg 8-2 as Julie Eich won her 75th game of her pitching career at Green Mountain fanning 12 batters as Lori Dawson led the Mounties at the plate with three hits.

Dan Faas celebrated his Eagle Court of Honor at Hope Unite Methodist Church after completion of his Eagle Scout project of planting 200 trees along the Marshalltown Bike Trail.

Brent Schmitz, of Gladbrook, discovered a strange looking tree on his way to school and through some research and the help of Ira Lorenz it was found to be a gingko tree defying air pollution, disease and insect infestation.

Candy Hutchens and Carol Schulze were named attorney generals for the sophomore and junior classes, respectively, at Mid-America Nazarene College in Olathe, Kan.

The MHS cross country girls saw five runners finish in the top 20 at the Urbandale Invitational as Jill Lageschulte finished fourth to help her team to the runner-up position sandwiched between top ranked Dowling and third ranked Urbandale.

Mary E. Youngbear, of Tama, and a sophomore at Coe College received an Iowa Scholarship for the Arts.

The Tama County 4-H dairy judging team of: Peggy Lyon, Larry Benda, Rick Hopper and Steve Ledvina won first place in the Brown Swiss judging at the 1977 Iowa State Fair.

The Green Mountain-Garwin Wolverines rode their strong running attack to open Class A District 6 play with a 35-7 victory over Olin as Wade Raymond carried the ball 22 times for 191 yards.

On Safety Awareness Day at the Iowa State Fair, three members of the Marshalltown Mods 4-H Club: mary Kay Yokum, Lindsay Searle and Jamie Schultz performed “Splish, Splash, Sploosh,” a skit written by Schultz wearing T-shirts designed by the girls. The skit talked about the buddy system when swimming and water safety.

The NESCO girls softball team thumped Northeast Hamilton 15-1 as Jennifer Peck and Robin Perisho combined to hurl a two-hitter with Pam Nelson hitting a two-run double in the 12-run second inning.

Gladbrook brothers, Gage and Joseph Smith, won trophies at the Iowa State Fair as Joseph defended his Men’s Horseshoe Pitching Championship going undefeated in the 12-man competition and Gage competed for the deadlift competition in the 148-165 pound class winning with a 405 pound deadlift.

The MHS girls swim team opened its season with a 140-43 romp over Newton as senior Anne Bloom, junior Stacey Spooner and sophomore Heather Rouse each captured two victories. Bloom won the 200-meter freestyle and the 100 backstroke; Spooner took the 50 freestyle and the 500 freestyle and Rouse captured the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke.

The Green Mountain baseball team defeated Norway 5-4 in the season opener as Tim Odle led the winning hitting attack with a double and a single.
