The Bobcat boys soccer team got its first victory of the season when Ricardo Mares successfully struck the back of the net to break the tie and secure the 2-1 win.

Three Marshalltown High School students, senior Sarah Renze, junior Marie Peleck and sophomore Christine Micheel were honored at the 105th annual meeting of the Iowa Academy of Science at Luther College in Decorah on the basis of their independent science research projects.

MHS girls track team made it three-in-a-row for the Bobcat Invitational crown as Peri Woltjer set a new record in the high jump at 5 feet 2 inches and along with Patty Fisher, Karen Clark and Jaci Farrell set a new 10 flight shuttle hurdle relay record.

The BCLUW boys track team used eight event firsts to power the team to the North Iowa Cedar League West Division championship with 147 points as Dane McDonald led the way winning the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meter races.

The MHS boys golf squad behind David Briggs 36, for a share of the medalist honors, won the Southeast Polk golf triangular with a 153 team score to the Boone, 165 and the Southeast Polk’s 179.

Paul Kemp, David Fouch and Kyle Weuve walked approximately 12.5 miles to raise money for the March of Dimes and along with 275 other children raised $8,256.

AWANA group members from the First Baptist Church of: Bailey Wildt, Raechel Hannam, Jacob Van Pelt, Alexis Schneider, Sydney Grewell, Sydnie Wohlert and Morgan Finch collected 8,000 pop can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House to help local families.

Members of Phyllis Rodgers sixth grade class at GMG: Lisa Tichy, Ryan Faircloth, Stacy Roberts and Bobby Krull planted a maple tree on the elementary grounds in the “Trees for Kids” project.

Michelle Wobeter, Kathy Ryden and Jody Roseland were installed as the presidents of the eighth, ninth and 10th grade Y-teens, respectively.

MHS senior Teri Drennon was awarded a Dean’s Business Scholarship to DePaul University, a competitive merit scholarship selected on the basis of academic proficiency, leadership and extra-curricular activities.

Top 4-H members were selected to represent Marshall County at the Iowa State Fair in the Educational Presentation Contest: Deanna Caputo, of Conrad; Cindy Grewell, of Liscomb; and Jana Manz and Bill Ormston, both of Marshalltown.

Jon Hughes and Jon Klinkefus designed a solar unit in their ninth grade physical science class at Lenihan Junior High School that heated water in tubing inside the unit 28 degrees in 10 minutes.

Kate Johnson shot a 46 for runner-up medalist honors at the eight-team Cardinal Invitational and led the MHS girls golf to capture the title with a 194-204 win over second place finisher, Newton.

The MHS Variety Show of 16 acts featured the talents of John Harkness as Tarzan, Paul Wasielewski, Monkey; Mitch Maxted, Jane; and the narrator, Tim Polzin in the one-act play “Gitarzan,” about a jungle boy and his band who are discovered and destined to go far.

Sarah, Ryan and Katy Reyerson were part of a campaign by the Iowa Valley Bike Club to urge family participation in the Marshmallo Bike Ride with a special $20 package which included a 10 mile ride on the bike path, a meal for the entire family and a one year membership to IVBC for new members.

Ashley Keller, 12, of Laurel, qualified to compete in the 1993 USA Junior Olympics at the State AAU Tumbling Championships by winning first place in Level 3, 12-to 14-year-old division.

MHS boys tennis squad upset Cedar Falls 7-2 as Jim Nieman, Mark Hammitt, Frank Zink, Dan Clayton and Glen Wilson all recorded singles victories for the ‘Cats.
