BCLUW’s Keri Norman and East Marshall’s Kiffany Dunham continued their season-long duel in the 800 meter run as Norman defeated Dunham by .32 seconds and both crossed the finish line breaking the old meet record.

Nine records were broke at the South Tama Invitational: Craig Rempp, of West Marshall, set a new record in the 2-mile race as teammate Mike Knutson broke the 880; BCL set a new one in the 440 relay; Dan Dierks, of North Tama, 220 yard dash; Steve Settle, of Nevada, new discus and shot put records as teammate Craig Nordie broke the 120 high hurdles mark and the 180 low hurdles; finally the Class AA mile relay record fell to Knoxville.

West Marshall won both ends of a golf triangular against East Marshall and Colo-NESCO as the girls won with a score of 200 with Juree Muench as medalist with a 48 and the boys won their meet with a 175 as Jesse Easton tied with Brendan Angell of Colo-NESCO for medalist honors with a 41.

The MHS Spring Band Concert featured the talents of: Kendra Fish, Linda Blair (soloist); Phil Rundall, Jason Faas (soloist); Emily Reese and Tony Braack among others.

In the MHS Spring Band Concert Kim Stone had a trumpet solo in the selection “Desert Star” and Krystal Lacina played a clarinet solo in “Solo de Concours.”

During the May 4 meeting of Rotary, Junior Rotarian Jody Spittal was awarded the Nick Norris Junior Rotarian Scholarship.

Two Knight of Columbus $400 college scholarships were awarded to Karen Heinrichs, a MHS senior who will attend Marshalltown School of Nursing, and Lynette Thoms, a Garwin High School senior set to attend St. Ambrose College.

The Bobcat girls’ golf squad paced by Emily Allison’s 42 for medalist honors handed Grundy Center its first dual loss in the tightly contested 178-179 win.

The Bobcat girls’ tennis team rolled up 114 points to take the South Tama tournament as Shannon Fagerlund led the squad when she captured the No. 1 singles championship.

MHS seniors Tom Calhoon and Kraig Holubar earned scholarships valued at $2,400 each ato attend the University of Northern Iowa at the Iowa Industrial Education Exposition with the cane rocker and roll top desk each boy constructed.

MHS seniors Luke Demmel, Kellyn Fogarty and Derek Williams took top honors at the Class 4A district meet and led the ‘Cats to seven state track entries.

Anson Elementary students Adam Loren, Jenny Betts and Minda Davison picked out prizes at the TV Busters awards ceremony for watching no TV for a total of 1,270 days for all the students that participated.

For the fourth year in a row, the MHS boys track team won the Hawk Relays title with the highlight of the meet being the rematch of the 4×400 meter relay in which the two teams were disqualified at the Drake Relays. This time no disqualifications, just Tim Brennecke, Emmett Huston, Greg McKelvey and Mike Jorgensen running away with the race and a new school record.

The 2008 Evening Lions $500 Scholarship winners were: Allison Vandegrift and Matthew Ingram, both MHS seniors.

For the first since 1987, the MHS girls track team captured districts as Michelle Duder and Tara Sondall’s efforts helped lead the team to victory. Duder took first in the 800 meter dash and helped the 4×800 relay team to victory as Sondall was first in the 400 meter dash, second in the 200 meter and helped the 4×400 relay to a third place finish.

During “Dress-Up Week” at Garwin High School, four students decided to portray the members of the rock group KISS: Pat Collins, Gary Judge, Clark Thurston and Joel Johnson.

GMG senior Cory Bacon won the 100 meter low hurdles in a time of 16.53 seconds at the Class A regional meet and qualified for a spot in the state track and field meet.

The MHS girls’ tennis squad rolled to a 8-3 dual victory over Newton as Shannon Fagerlund, Janis Huff, Hayley Hickman and Regan Bermudez all scored singles wins.

MHS girls’ tennis led by Renee Grimes 10-3 win helped the team score a 5-1 victory over Grinnell in the rain-shortened final dual of the season.
