Man arrested after restaurant break-in

A local man is in the Marshall County Jail after a witness saw him fleeing a restaurant after hours and reported the incident to police.

Carlos Mendoza, 21, was arrested earlier this week by the Marshalltown Police Department.

Personnel quickly responded to the KFC/Taco Bell area, and with use of Police K-9, officers were able to locate Mendoza and stolen money according to a police report.

He was charged with Burglary 2nd Degree-Class “C” Felony

(Suspect allegedly broke into business with incendiary device). Mendoza was also charged with Interference with Official Acts-Simple Misdemeanor.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the MPD, 641-754-5725 or Marshall County Crime Stoppers, 641-753-1234.

Mendoza’s preliminary hearing is 1 p.m. Aug. 4.

Bond is $10,000 cash or surety.

• Lang Donald Leonard made an initial appearance on a pre-trial release violation charge. Chad Frese will continue a counsel. The sentencing hearing is scheduled at 11 a.m. on Sept. 5. Bond is set at $25,000 cash or surety.

• Ronald L. Hinders Jr. made an initial appearance on a theft-fifth degree charge and two counts of a probation violation charge. Jeff Hazen will continue as counsel. A pre-trial conference on the theft charge is set at 10 a.m. on July 28. The probation revocation hearings are also scheduled at 10 a.m. on July 28. Hinders is released on his promise to appear on the theft-fifth degree charge. Bond on the probation charges is set at $10,000 cash only.

• Ryan Heath Chapman made an initial appearance on a violation of a no-contact order/contempt of court charge. Jennifer Bonzer will continue as counsel. The contempt hearing is scheduled at 3:15 p.m. on Aug. 7. Bond is set at $1,000 cash or surety. A new no-contact order has been issued for the protected party.

• Earnest Earl Taylor, of Ames, made an initial appearance on a prohibited acts/possession of prescription drugs charge and a interference with official acts charge. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on Aug. 4. Bond is set at $1,000 cash or surety.

• Javier Guadalupe Perales made an initial appearance on a domestic abuse assault-second offense charge and a disorderly conduct charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on Aug. 14. Perales is released with supervision through the Department of Correctional Services and is to report to the adult probation office by 4 p.m. today and sign a pre-trial release agreement. If he owns or possesses any firearms or ammunition, Perales is to contact the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office within 24 hours to make arrangements to surrender them. A no-contact order has been issued for the protected party.

• David Vancannon made an initial appearance on a probation violation charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The probation revocation hearing is scheduled at 10 a.m. on Aug. 23. Vancannon is released with supervision through his probation officer.

• Ulysses Julius Jones III made an initial appearance on a public consumption charge. He pleaded guilty and the fine is $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75, due within 30 days.

• On July 19, a minivan driven by Jose Pallares Silva, of Marshalltown, was southbound in the 900 block of South 10th Avenue when a child on a bicycle darted out of an alleyway into the path of the minivan which slammed on its brakes, but was unable to avoid colliding with the bicycle. The child was transported to the UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown emergency room by his parents.
