• Shevaun Marie Bastarache made an initial appearance on a domestic abuse assault causing bodily injury or mental illness-first offense charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on May 9. Bond is set at $1,000 cash or surety. A no-contact order has been issued for the protected party.

• Oscar Miguel Nunez Cabrera made an initial appearance on a domestic abuse assault displaying or using a weapon charge and a child endangerment charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on May 9. Bond is set at $2,000 cash only. A no-contact order has been issued for the protected parties.

• Bishok Bagik Thon made an initial appearance on a driving under suspension charge, a no insurance charge, a no registration charge and a speeding charge. Thon pleaded not guilty and a pre-trial conference is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. on May 29 in Magistrate Court.

• Giles Evan Richard Clark made an initial appearance on a theft-third degree charge and a contributing to the delinquency of a minor charge. Clark will hire his own counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on May 17. Clark is released on his promise to appear.

• Solange Ndayishimiye made an initial appearance on a striking fixtures on a highway charge. Ndayishimiye pleaded guilty and the fine is $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75, due within 30 days. A paid bond was condemned for payment with the remainder remitted to the defendant.

• Joseph Ryan Friestad made an initial appearance on a possession of marijuana charge. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on May 16. A substance abuse evaluation is ordered with the results submitted to the court within 60 days.

• Melva Elaine Lang made an initial appearance on a probation violation charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The probation revocation hearing will be scheduled by the District Court.

• Eric Maurice Mayes Sr. made an initial appearance on a disorderly conduct charge. Mayes pleaded not guilty and a pre-trial conference is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. on May 29 in Magistrate Court.

• Alexandria Marie Shadden made an initial appearance on a possession of marijuana-second offense charge, a possession of drug paraphernalia charge and a permitting an unauthorized person to drive charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on May 16. Bond will continue as posted until the conclusion of this case. A substance abuse evaluation is ordered with the results submitted to the court within 60 days.

• Mathew Jay Cook made an initial appearance on a driving while barred charge, a driving while revoked charge, a driving under suspension charge, a possession of drug paraphernalia charge, a no valid driver’s license charge, a no insurance charge, a dark windows/windshield charge and a unlawful use of license charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on May 16. Bond will continue as posted until the conclusion of this case.

• Drew William Quick made an initial appearance on a littering charge. Quick pleaded guilty and the ine is $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75, due within 30 days.

Accidents

• On April 23, a car driven by Pradeep Y. Sarswat, 69, of Marshalltown, and a vehicle driven by Angela Marie Seals, 35, of Baxter, were exiting parking spots opposite each other in the Hy-Vee parking lot when the two vehicles collided. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Seals vehicle was estimated at $500 while the Sarswat car received an estimated $1,000 in damage.

• On Friday, a pickup driven by Nathan Christian Butler, 26, of Waterloo, was eastbound on East Main Street at the intersection with Third Avenue when the driver squealed his tires, accelerated, running a flashing red light and collided with a minivan driven by Micheal Steven Fisher, 50, of Marshalltown, before leaving the scene. No injuries were reported. Butler was apprehended later and charged with failure to obey a traffic control device, leaving the scene of an accident-failure to provide aid or information, failure to maintain control and no insurance-accident. Damage to both vehicles was estimated at $4,000 each.

• On Friday, a pickup driven by Nathan Christian Butler, 26, of Waterloo, was eastbound on East Main Street Road when it left the roadway to the right and crashed into the ditch wet with mud. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Butler pickup was estimated at $4,000.

• On Friday, a pickup driven by Nathan Christian Butler, 26, of Waterloo, was eastbound on East Main Street Road when it sideswiped a pickup driven by Som Lovan, 55, of Marshalltown, which was attempting to turn onto South 12th Avenue. No injuries were reported. Butler was cited for leaving the scene of an accident-property damage only, no insurance-accident, failure to stop in the assured, clear distance and operation while under the influence. Damage to the Butler pickup was estimated at $2,500 while the Lovan pickup received an estimated $2,000 in damage.
