• Jacob Lee Catherwood made an initial appearance on a driving while barred charge, a possession of drug paraphernalia charge, a driving under suspension charge, a no insurance charge, a stop sign violation charge and a failure to yield to an emergency vehicle charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on April 18. Bond is set at $2,000 cash or surety.

• Derrick Nathan Crouch made an initial appearance on a failure to appear for court fines charge and a possession of drug paraphernalia charge. A pre-trial conference is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. on April 24 in Magistrate Court. Crouch is released on his promise to appear.

• Thomas Guido Vasquez made an initial appearance on a possession of marijuana charge, a possession of drug paraphernalia charge and a stopping on the traveled portion of a roadway charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on April 26. Vasquez was released on his promise to appear. A substance abuse evaluation is ordered with the results submitted to the court within 60 days.

• Alexis Marie Matthews made an initial appearance on a dark windows charge and a driving under suspension charge. Matthews pleaded guilty to both charges. The fine on the dark windows was $50 with a $17.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $127.50. The fine on the driving under suspension charge was $250 with an $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50. All fines are due within 30 days.

• Vily Hernandez made an initial appearance through a Spanish interpreter on an expired driver’s license charge. Hernandez pleaded guilty and the fine is $50 with a $17.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $127.50, due within 30 days.

• Levi David Phillips made an initial appearance through counsel, Aron Vaughn, on a possession of methamphetamine-first offense charge, a possession of marijuana-first offense charge, a possession of drug paraphernalia charge and a driving under suspension charge. The preliminary hearing was waived by counsel. Bond will continue as posted until the conclusion of this case.

• Aung Kyaw Moe made an initial appearance on two counts of a dog at large charge. Moe pleaded guilty to both counts and the fine was $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75 plus a $25 civil penalty fee on both counts, due within 30 days.

• Marsha Gail Darby made an initial appearance on two counts of a dog at large charge. Darby pleaded guilty to both counts and the fine is $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75 plus a civil penalty fee of $25 on each count, due within 30 days.

• Luis Angel Rodriguez Garcia made an initial appearance on a failure to appear for a pre-trial conference charge. Christian Stickrod will continue as counsel. The pre-trial conference will be rescheduled by the District Associate Court. Bond is set at $1,000 cash or surety.

• David Brown made an initial appearance on a driving under suspension charge and a registration violation charge. Brown pleaded not guilty and a pre-trial conference is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. on May 8 in Magistrate Court.

• Javier Gonzalez Torres made an initial appearance through a Spanish interpreter on a driving under suspension charge. Gonzalez Torres pleaded guilty and the fine is $250 with an $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50, due within 30 days.

• James William Forsythe made an initial appearance on a driving under suspension charge. Forsythe pleaded not guilty and a pre-trial conference is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. on April 24 in Magistrate Court.

Accidents

• On Friday, a vehicle driven by Maria Garcia-Alcaraz, 19, of Marshalltown, was westbound on West Madison attempting to turn onto South Sixth Street when the driver cut the turn too sharp and collided with a car driven by Lindsey Marie Laughlin, 27, of Marshalltown, which was stopped at the stop sign on Sixth Street. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Laughlin car was estimated at $500 while the Garcia-Alcaraz vehicle received an estimated $2,500 in damage.

• On Saturday, a vehicle driven by Brian Lee Chapman, 68, of Cedar Rapids, was eastbound on Highway 30 when it struck a deer that entered the roadway. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Chapman vehicle was estimated at $4,000.

• On Sunday, a pickup driven by Ralph Albert Colbeth, 86, of Montour, was traveling through the Walmart parking lot when it struck a stop sign due to the inability to see it during the rain. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Colbeth pickup was estimated at $8,000 while the stop sign received an estimated $300 in damage.
