Court — Monday

• William John Alman made an initial appearance on a prohibited use of fireworks charge. Alman pleaded guilty and the fine is $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75, due within 30 days.

• Jesus Christiano Morales made an initial appearance on a operating while under the influence-first offense charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on July 31. A substance abuse evaluation is ordered with the results submitted to the court within 60 days.

• Salud Castillo made an initial appearance on a simple assault charge. Castillo pleaded not guilty and a pre-trial conference is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 28 in Magistrate Court. Bond is set at $300 cash or surety.

• Lissette Villarreal, of Newton, made an initial appearance on a driving while barred-habitual offender charge, a leaving the scene of an accident-property damage only charge, a driving under suspension charge, a no insurance-accident charge, a no valid driver’s license charge and a stop sign violation charge. The public defender’s office is appointed as counsel. The preliminary hearing is scheduled at 1 p.m. on July 31. Villarreal is released on her promise to appear.

• Mandy Sue Baker made an initial appearance on a driving under suspension charge. Baker pleaded not guilty and a pre-trial conference is scheduled at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 21 in Magistrate Court.

• Alejandro Isaac Martinez failed to make an initial appearance on a driving under suspension charge, a no insurance charge, a speeding charge and a no valid driver’s license charge. The court defaulted Martinez on all charges. On the driving under suspension charge the fine is $250 each with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50. The fine on the no insurance charge is $250 with a $87.50 surcharge, a $5 county enforcement initiative surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $402.50. The fine on the speedin charge is $80 with a $28 surcharge, a $5 county enforcement initiative surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $173. The fine on the no valid driver’s license charge is $200 with a $70 surcharge a $5 county enforcement initiative surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $335. All payments are due within 30 days.

• Susan Lynne Ottilie failed to make an appearance on a driving under suspension charge and the court defaulted the charge. The fine is $250 with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50, due within 30 days.

• On Friday, a burglary of a motor vehicle resulting in the theft of items in the motor vehicle was reported in the 200 block of South Seventh Avenue.

• On Friday, a burglary was reported in the 300 block of Sharon Avenue.

• On Saturday, a theft was reported in the 3200 block of South 12th Street.

• On Saturday, a case of vandalism to property in the commission of an attempted burglary was reported in the 2000 block of East Church Street.

• On Saturday, Dillon Schultz, 27, was arrested for speeding, driving under suspension and eluding.

• On Sunday, Jose Zaragoza, 20, was arrested for dogs at large.

• On Monday, Lisette Villarreal, 23, was arrested for no insurance-accident, no valid driver’s license, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to obey a stop sign, driving under suspension and driving while barred.

Accidents

• On Saturday, a car driven by James Leonard Hunter, 40, of Newton, was southbound on Governor Road stopped at the intersection with Iowa Avenue East when he proceeded to turn left and collided with a car driven by Matthew Colton Chatman, 25, of Polk City, which was making a left turn from Iowa Avenue East onto Governor Road. No injuries were reported. Hunter was cited for failure to obey a stop sign and yield the right of way. Damage to the Hunter car was estimated at $1,500 while the Chatman car received an estimated $7,000 in damage.

• On Saturday, a pickup driven by Seth Ryan Morrow, 36, of Toledo, was making a left turn from East Anson Street onto South 18th Avenue when it collided with a pickup driven by Juan Gabriel Hernandez Martinez, 35, of Marshalltown, which was northbound on 18th Avenue. No injuries were reported. Morrow was cited for failure to obey a stop sign and yield the right of way. Damage to the Morrow pickup ws estimated at $1,000 while the Hernandez Martinez pickup received an estimated $2,000 in damage.

• On Friday, Juan Carlos Velazco Jr., 27, was arrested for assault on persons in certain occupations.

• On Friday, Shelby Lyn Peak, 27, was arrested on a warrant.

• On Sunday, Paige Brown, 25, was arrested for identity theft, malicious prosecution, driving while barred-habitual offender, driving under suspension, failure to remove injurious materials, open contaner and operating while under the influence-first offense.
