Saving lives

T-R PHOTO BY MIKE DONAHEY

On Tuesday, Marshall County Sheriff Steve Hoffman temporarily substituted an American Red Cross polo for his uniform and a drill for his sidearm as he volunteered to help the American Red Cross and the Marshalltown Fire Department install smoke detectors and provide educational material about fire and tornado safety to residents of Marshalltown’s Sunset Village Trailer Court. Hoffman, an active member with the Red Cross for a number of years, is pictured installing a smoke detector in a resident’s trailer. The smoke detectors were provided free of charge by the Red Cross. Those with existing smoke detectors had batteries checked and replaced, free-of-charge, if necessary. Also helping in this joint effort coordinated by the Red Cross and the MFD in distributing fire safety and educational material, were volunteers members from the Marshalltown Community College Student Senate and Americorps National Civilian Community Corps as part of the United Way Day of Giving.
