Appreciation through beautification

Community organizers interested in keeping Marshalltown clean are hoping to spur continued beautification efforts through a new initiative.

Thank-you cards can now be sent out to community members who have made efforts to improve their properties from members of the local CLEANIAC group.

These actions can range from landscaping and cleaning up one’s yard to having new siding installed or putting on a fresh coat of paint.

To nominate someone, simply go to the CLEANIAC Facebook page, click on the “send message” button, and then write the address and brief description of work that’s been done. No name is needed. A CLEANIAC volunteer may then do a site check before a card is sent out.

“This is a way to recognize your neighbors in a quiet fashion for any improvements they’ve done,” said CLEANIAC Spokesman Dan Engesser.

This initiative’s success rests on the shoulders of the community, Engesser said, adding that businesses are encouraged to participate as well by sending in nominations of those they believe should be acknowledged.

Independent Insurance has been a long-time supporter of CLEANIAC and will be active with the thank-you initiative by nominating homeowners.

CLEANIAC is also working alongside the city, which develops a list of residents who wish to get larger scale projects approved. Some of these include new garages, extensions on to an existing structure and other projects. These will be reviewed by the committee and thank-yous will be given out at their digression.

The committee is constantly looking to make Marshalltown as aesthetically appealing as possible. They spread the word by visiting middle and elementary schools to explain their mission: community pride.

“This initiative hinges on the community,” Engesser said. “We want to acknowledge those that have made improvements and convince people how much of an impact each of them can have.”
