Marshalltown Lennox location launches new eco-friendly furnace

“They are very, very, very proud about it.”

Lennox Industries-Marshalltown Plant Manager Miguel Gutiérrez said the plant workforce is celebrating the launch of a new, environment-friendly residential furnace.

“It was developed by Lennox, and it was developed to be launched here in Marshalltown,” he said. “We are the best plant for doing that … Marshalltown was the best facility Lennox could have picked to launch these products.”

The new unit, officially dubbed the SL280NV Ultra Low NOx (nitrogen oxide) furnace, was launched in February. It is designed to have low environmental impact, and is a residential unit; Gutiérrez said research and development took place mostly at the corporate level, and Lennox Industries leaders chose the Marshalltown plant to launch the furnace.

“It achieves the NOx emission levels that are set by the State of California,” said Lennox Industries Senior Manager of Advance Manufacturing in Marshalltown Dane Wills, adding the California standards on emissions are strict. “Lennox will be the first to market to meet those requirements.”

Gutiérrez said Lennox has a competitive advantage with the launch of the unit, adding it is “making Lennox a stronger brand.”

Wills said the launch was a long time coming.

“From the start, it’s probably a 3-4 year process, maybe a little longer than that,” he said. “It’s been a pretty lengthy process to get to where we are today.”

Gutiérrez said the local Lennox location has employees with excellent product knowledge, as well as expertise in launching new products.

“We have a celebration here in the plans, we have a lot of people coming,” he said. “We have people from our corporate offices, we’ve got an award of recognition from our corporate offices.”

The furnace has also won the Marshalltown plant recognition from outside Lennox. It won the “Best of IBS” Award for Best Green Building Product at the 2018 National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) International Builders Show.

“There were over 300 entrants, and there were 27 industry and media judges,” Gutiérrez said of the NAHB award.

He added the product will be featured as one of the “2018 Hot 50 Products” in the April issue of Green Builder Magazine.
