Red Cross serves thousands of meals

Getting food and water into the hands of disaster victims is one of the many functions of the American Red Cross. The organization brought over 260 volunteers and 75 staff to Marshalltown in the wake of the July 19 tornado and have been serving the community since.

Here are some stats from Red Cross Greater Iowa Regional Communications Officer Mark Tauscheck on what the organization has given to storm victims through Thursday:

•15,423 meals

•39,727 snacks

•37,251 bulk items, including shovels, rakes, gloves, totes, tarps, bug spray and more

•195 cases opened, serving 755 clients

•368 health services and mental health contacts

•10 emergency response vehicles on Marshalltown streets reaching out with food and water
