Homecoming week at Marshalltown Schools has already brought themed spirit days, a mini parade and carnival. Thursday evening the student body’s picks for king and queen were crowned.

This year’s Homecoming royalty are King Derrick Garth Jr. and Queen Daisy Lopez. They were crowned after a lively pep rally on the Marshalltown High School-Community Auditorium stage. The crowd, largely made up of fellow high school students, erupted in cheers and applause at the royalty announcements.

“I’m shook,” Lopez said. “It feels great.”

She said she participates in 4-H, Iowa Valley Leadership and Al Exito.

Looks of surprise flashed across both winners’ faces when their names were announced. Last year’s Homecoming King Lucas Duff and Queen Gretchen Benscoter were on hand to crown the 2018 winners.

All of the members of this year’s Homecoming court were recognized prior to the crowning. Each pair of nominees were called individually to come up to the stage – the court was nominated by this year’s senior class.

Among the court members were Jacob Smith, Bennett O’Hare, Wade Canaday, Brent Johnson, Tate Kuehner, Carson Potter, Allison Trowbridge, Itzel Hueso, Sloan Vry, Jordan Blue, Caroline Gassman and Alyvia Chadderdon. The entire court had a chance to meet with community members during Wednesday’s Cat’s Mini Parade at the high school campus. That was followed by the Cat’s Carnival at the MHS sports complex.

Both events took place in lieu of the traditional Homecoming parade in downtown Marshalltown. That event is set to return in 2019.

“It’s great, I was kind of surprised,” Garth said. The football player plays fullback and outside linebacker for the Bobcats football team.

With a new king and queen in place, Marshalltown students now turn their attention to Friday’s 7 p.m. Homecoming game against Sioux City West at Leonard Cole Field. The Bobcats will go into the game with a record of 3-2 while their opponents will come with a 2-3 record.

Once the score is settled Friday, students will focus on getting prepared and dressed up for the Homecoming dance 8-11 p.m. Saturday at the MHS cafeteria.
